My wife doesn't want to treat our 4year old son with stories about Santa Claus (who is in Germany called "Christmas Man"). First, because it is a silly invention for commercial purposes, a nerve-killing secular invention as a replacement for the Biblical meaning of the feast, superseding Jesus. Second, because she wants to be honest to our son. If he will find out that we told him fictions, maybe he will not believe anything else we are telling him.
But it is not so easy to be honest with your kids. Today I was witness of the following conversation:
- "Mum, does Santa Claus really exist?"
- "No, that has been only made up by people."
- "But he exists, really."
- "No son, he does not exist."
- "Mum you are so unbelievable!" (in German, there are simliar words for "unbeliving" and "unbelievable")
