I saw the result on telext..Aberavon 13 - Caerphilly 17. Although I wished Aberavon well I had a sneaky feeling that Caerphilly would win this one. Caerphilly have had a disaster of a season losing 19 out of 20 league matches. However they have known that they were relegation contenders for several months and have had ample time to prepare well for this relegation battle with Aberavon. Charlie Fualkner seems to have done his homework well for Caerphilly. So it doesnt look to promising for Aberavon in the 2nd leg playing away from home. It should never have come to this as Aberavon most probably have worn themselves out to win the 1st division championships whiulst Caerphilly would have most probably been resting some key players ready for this match. It does make a mockery of the system wherby you could have a team lose every match in the Premier and just concentrate on winning two at the end of the season to stay up. I did make a comment on the Aberavon web site the other day suggesting that they would be better off refusing to play in these play-offs on principle and waiting for the outcome of their legal challenge to that promotion fiasco last season. The WRU must take the blame for all this silly nonsence and hopefully we will see some normality brought back into the game before the start of next season.

[> Subject: Firstly Caerphilly havent rested key players. Secondly, with Caerphilly being so poor as you admit surely any team going up should be able to beat a team that could only muster 1 win in an entire season ? The playoff idea is a fair one to stop the likes of Cross Keys, Dunvant etc coming up and going back down.

>What you negative people seem to forget is that there is quite a difference in funding between Div 1 clubs and the lesser premier clubs. Probabaly to the tune of £250K.

So even teams like Caerphilly are well positioned to survive when they play Div 1 clubs, not only because they have played ten games less, but also having more money for a bigger squad. Absolutely crucial at this time of the season.

EGM - MUST VOTE FOR AUTOMATIC PROMOTION.

Come on the Wizards do us all a favour and show them in the second leg !

PS: Full team or not, they certainly were n't trying against the Scarlets. I was there ! Chris Wyatt running 60 metres unopposed. Give me a break. He even stopped for a cigarette along the way.
[> [> Subject: Yes they didnt try against the Scarlets but certainly did against Ebbw Vale 4 days later. Automatic promotion im against. If you're good enough, beat the premier whipping boys and prove you're good enough. Maybe if the league is extended to 10 you can have winner goes up, runner up play off with 2nd bottom but otherwise its pointless going up if you cant even beat the poorest side in the league. EGM by the way isnt addressing league issues only the TWP and Glanmors get out of jail variation of it

It is totalaly unfare when a taem like Caerphilly who has been funded has a premier team and failed, should have the chance to to stay in the premier div, and play a team who won the 1st div on merit, who,s funding is no where near what Caephilly has had in the last to season,s.
[> [> Subject: But if Caerphilly cant win more than 1 game per season and Aberavon cant even beat them surely it means they arent good enough to go up.

[> Subject: Captain Morgan - Once again your knowledgable relative from the city has been proved right in his belief that Caerphilly would beat Aberavon in the play off today. My prediction for the second leg that will now seem to be a formality, will result in a good win for Aberavon.Next season it WILL be Poola & then let battle recommence with the big boys!!!!!!

[> Subject: Re: I saw that the crowd was poor - 2500, under half of what we could have expected at the Park had we got there. It doubts Aberavon's ability to compete at the top level with support like this. The second leg will probably have a similar crowd.
