Rugby: Super Smith looks certain at full-back
A practice match threw up one big question for Pontypool head coach Steve Jones ñ just who will wear the number ten jersey this season?
It is the type of question Jones wonít relish answering because he has two of the divisionís best outside halves to choose from.
And that was clearly evident on Saturday as Pooler eased to victory against their old English opponents Nuneaton.
With scrum-halves Nicky Lloyd and Kevin Ellis both on holiday, last seasonís top points scorer, Byron Hayward, was handed the number nine duties for the day, while the impressive Stuart Lawrence stepped into his favoured outside-half role.
And Lawrence shone, orchestrating a great team display with some mouth-watering runs and great kicks to touch.
ìItís certainly going to be a battle for the number ten spot,î admitted team manager Tony Clarke.
ìStuart had a great game and did really well. Itís the type of competition we need, though. Itís good for the players and the fans because they will have to push hard every week to keep their place. There will be no rest for anyone.î
Clarke was just as pleased with his sideís overall performance in a match that saw Pooler touchdown with nine tries bringing a welcomed pre-season spark on a summer day.
ìIt was a good open game with few scrums and lineouts. It was always going to be a low-key game after Newport last week but we did most things right and thatís a very big positive,î said Clarke.
Plenty of players impressed on the day. Dai Smith looks a certainty for the full-back spot when Pooler kick-off against Bonymaen on August 31.
Smith looked solid at the back when tested with a rare high ball and, just as importantly, was powerful in defence, as Pooler reigned supreme, letting in just the one consolation try.
He was deservedly the top try scorer on the day too, bagging a brace of touchdowns, the best coming from a confident team move from deep that saw him power over unmarked.
New signing Richard Hunt looks like he could be the man to provide some stability in the line-out. Pooler looked comfortable, dominating play in the set piece with Hunt showing some good turns of strength and speed as he made regular ground with his pulsating drives.
Joel Griffin too looks like he has come on leaps and bounds in the close season by grabbing a great try when he roared up field unmarked.
