AS A LOAYAL ABERAVON SUPPORTER. A WANT TO WISH YOU GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR COURT CASE AGAINST THE WRU. I DONT THINK YOU WILL HAVE MUCH LUCK AS THEY ARE WELL KNOWN FOR DRAGGING THERE HEALS AND PLAYING FOR TIME. LIKE YOU WE ALL THINK THAT THE PLAYOFFS ARE COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME.AFTER SUCH A LONG SEASON IT IS BOWND TO TAKE ITS TOLL ON THE PLAYERS ESPECIALLY AFTER BEING STITCHED UP BY THE UNION LAST YEAR.IN MY OPINION BOTH OF OUR CLUDS COULD MAKE A SIGNIFICENT CONTRIBUTION TO THE PREMIERSHIP WHICH ONLY WANTS THE GANG OF SIX TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN. GOOD LUCK TO YOU AND DONT LRT THE BUGGERS GET YOU DOWN

Does anyone know the situation regarding Aberavon's open court case against the WRU ?

Although they are now champions and could win the play off to get promoted, I can't really see them dropping the case because one of the biggest factors of their case was the lost revenue this year caused by non-premiership rugby and no Europeon Shield place.

I would have thought that this needed to be resolved prior to the play off with Caerphilly, because as Bob Jude reported, if they on the case they would in effect have all their Division 1 points for this season deducted and therefore Pooler would replace them as Division 1 Champions and therefore should have the play off spot, which would make the Aberavon v Caerphilly play off null and void !

All very legal and confusing I know, but can anyone shed any light ??

Truly stunned that Aberavon got the 14 tries, but there must have been great pressure on them and hats off to them: they had to get those tries and (although touch and go)they did.

Over the last two years Aberavon have been the best side in Div 1. Be interested to see how they cope with Caerphilly. They were destroyed last night, but Aberavon don't have that sort of firepower. Could be very interesting indeed. Any thoughts?

Even though I'd conceded the title on Wednesday night, I just had to go down yesterday. I have no nails left !

Congratulations to Aberavon, I think it is fair to say that over the season they have deserved it. Best of luck against the Castleman, we will all be rooting for you !!

I just have to mention Dunvant. For those of you, like me, that were there, please join me in thanking Dunvant for the monumental effort yesterday. They could n't have done any more to try and stop the Wizards, Believe you me they tried tooth and nail !

A team that were already relegated and had four players unexpectedly pull out of their proposed starting line up.(Two policeman called away on a murder investigation, one of which was Phil Sparrow). They really did give it their all for 80 MINS (unlike TONDU). They had a prop sent off with 15 mins to go for butting and just could n't withstand the Wizards 5 metre scrum shoves with literally minutes to go !!

THANK YOU DUNVANT YOU ARE A CREDIT TO WELSH RUGBY. I'M SURE YOU WILL BOUNCE STRAIGHT BACK. PS: THAT SCRUN HALF - REES -IS A FUTURE STAR.

Time for us to regroup, it's important that we start planning for next season now. I'd like to think we will keep all our players and go one better next year.

A big thank you to Mr Jude, Steve Jones and all the players. Let next year be our year.

Comiserations to all. Myself and a lot of Ebbw supporters were really gutted when we heard on radio wales that they'd got the 14 trys. It would have been great to have more local derbys had you made it. You can be proud of your teams performances though, you've played well all year.
Best of luck for next season.

As things were so very close between Aberavon and Pontypool. Both sides level on points and trys at the end of the season. It would have been more appropiate if there had been a play off between both sides and the winner going straight into the premier instead of that silly arrangement that the WRU introduced(we all know it was to protect their favourite clubs-no names mentioned-in order to help prevent one of them having a bad season and ending up at the bottom of the premier division)

Well there we are. Lots of comments on our website concerning Pooler just missing out on promotion by a wisker. If Dunvant hadnt had a man sent off during the last 15 minutes things may have been different. If Dunvant hadnt been relegated a few days previously they would still have been fighting to stay up. If Tondu hadnt surprisingly played so poor in the second half against Aberavon at home with Aberavon taking full advantage(Tondu up until then had only lost 2 games at home)If Pontypool hadnt finished the season two games in front of Aberavon(which meant that Aberavon knew exactly what to do)If Pooler hadnt let a few trys go begging at home against Blackwood. It just seems that Pooler werent destined to do it yet again. However we must all hope that this season is a catalyst for greater things for Pooler in the future.
We will have to see what decisions will be made by the WRU and what rules will be put in place to protect their favourite clubs in the premier. I still believe that we need more clubs in the premier that the WRU propose. A two tier structure may be the answer as it would give progressive clubs like Pontypool the chance to play against stronger opposition on a regular basis. It does the 1st division no good when top clubs are putting cricket scores on the lesser clubs.

So, that's it, Aberavon scored their 14 tries (surprise, surprise, NOT!) and we are condemned to another season of 1st division rugby.

Although it was a great effort in the last few games of the season to see us playing exciting open running rugby and boosting our try count we have only ourselves to blame for not being the champions. These were the critical stages in our season :-

1. Losing at home to Llandovery and Rumney

2. Away defeats at Whitland and Treorchy
(The Aberavon defeat is excusable as they were at least a decent side)

3. Our inability to kill teams off. How many times did we get 30pts or so up in a game and ease off in the last quarter of an hour when we should have scored more tries?

4. So many needless replacements in matches, could have a bearing on 3 above

5. The failure for most of the season to address the lineout problem. With Chris Thomas throwing in for the latter part of the season we looked solid in this department, but it should have been resolved much earlier in the campaign.

Congratulations to Aberavon but one thing which now worries me is if we do win the 1st division next season do we go up or are the WRU going to bring in the 8 team premier league and deny anyone from outside next seasons premier the opportunity to win into it?

It is something we should be concerned about, we have shown all season that we are a club to be feared and respected (just ask Swansea) and we deserve to be competing at the highest level but I fear that the goalposts could be about to be moved bigtime and we may not be a part of it.

My commiserations go to everyone at Pontypool RFC for Aberavon pipping you to the title. It's been an amazing season with both of us experiencing highs and lows, particularly over the last few weeks on hearing each others scores and try counts. I cant believe how close it was - over eight months of rugby played and it wasn't settled until the last couple of minutes of the very last game. It really is a shame that one of us loses out as both clubs have done Division One proud this year and would be great to see us both in the top flight. It's been excellent the way the vast majority of both sets of supporters have been towards each other, and if we do find ourselves in different divisions next season, I will miss that. Whatever happenes over the next few weeks, I wish you all the very best for next season!!

Best of luck to the club for next season. Can anyone explain why Pooler finished two games before Aberavon? Doing so left them a target of 24 tries in two games, and surprise surprise, they scored 24 tries in two games. Why didn't the club insist on playing the last game at exactly the same time as Aberavon played their's? Let's not lose out for the same reason next year!

Can I first apologise for the anonymous Aberavon person that posted the "aberavon r the champions" nonsense below. There's no place for gloating of that nature in sport - I can just imagine how we'd feel if we'd not met the target you set us and someone from Pontypool had come along with that kind of cr@p.
Poola people, you have conducted yourselves with good grace here and on our site throughout this closest of run-ins to the end of the season. Thank you. Were there any justice (i.e. if someone other than the WRU was running this show) we'd both be up there battling away with the greedy six - we'd have been up last year, and then you should be going up this year, and without all the nonsense of playing off against a side who've had most of their best players sitting with their feet up in front of the telly for the past few weeks.
I sincerely wish all at Pontypool RFC the best of luck for the future.

Good luck to Aberavon - it's been nip and tuck all season and in the end they just edged it. Hope we get a chance to put the record straight soon!

Pooler fans do not give up hope yet. Now if you remember when Avon went to merthyr they only scored 12. I dont care if Dunvant are relegated that wont be easy, we struggled to score 14 against Bonymaen last tuesday at home. If they score 14 it will be very close indeed. Its not over yet the pressure is all on them, I think they may feel the pressure, I mean 30 mins have gone they only have 2-3 tries imagine it, com on Dunvant hold on!

Heart stopping stuff today but I was there sitting in the sun back last year on the first Saturday of the season when we lost 20-10, it's a long way off now but it must be said that I think we'll be there in division 1 next season due to Caerphily having been able to rest their key men knowing they only have to beat the Div.1 champions, who have fought tooth and nail all season, to stay in the top flight - something wrong somewhere - anyway thanks for a great contest ( which should have had far more coverage in the press, TV etc.) and all the very best for next year

commiserations to Pontypool having come so close. Methinks it was that poor show in the second half by Tondu at home to Aberavon which eventually swung the championship in Aberavons favour as they could not have had an easier team to play against today. Obviously I and all the Pontypool supporters including the team will be feeling very disappointed at having come so close.
So another year in the 1st division for Pooler. Lets hope that we can keep our player base and build from there to win the 1st div championship next season.

I can only describe the feelings when I heard that Aberavon had scored their 14th try as devastating. This only goes to provedthat to some of us Pontypool is more than a rugby club, it is an emotional sense of belonging and identity.

Firstly, a huge thank you to Bob Jude for providing the resources to allow us to start making tracks back towards where we belong. His contribution has been truly awesome.

Secondly, thank you to the players for some fantastic memories, the night against Swansea was one that I will never forget. The Ebbw match too was a credit to us all also.

Thirdly, I hope that our players have the spirit to continue as one and that particularly none of the key members leave for pastures new.

Fourthly, like all things in life, we must learn from this experience, we must remember how today feels when playing away from home on a cold, wet, dark Saturday in December. We must not allow ourselves to be beaten by bottom half clubs and should have an real, determined, gritty, ruthless aim of winning every match next season.

Lastly, whether we win or lose, we have again proved that our supporters are some of the best and most committed in Welsh rugby.

Enjoy the summer, see you all refreshed and positive in September!

What can be said about Aberavon winning? Aberavon won by beating a team already relegated and by scoring more than 14 tries. This try total was only achieved after a Dunvant prop, with nothing to play for and obviously no care in the world, was sent off for a headbutt. What punishment will this player get? Not as much of a punishment as all of Pooler's fans will get by having to endure Div 1 rugby for another season. Not as much of a fine as it has cost in the loss of potential revenue for Pooler playing in the Premier Div. It is so frustrating to have been robbed of our rightful place alongside the top clubs in this way. It is even more frustrating when you are living overseas and have to find out the news via the internet.
Never mind, maybe the national team will do well in SA - but most likely not and we will be embarrassed in front of the world again!

Why don't the WRU have a change of heart and let Pontypool and Aberavon into the Premiership because as I see it, these two sides are too stong for the First Division.

The WRU moved the goalposts last season stopping Aberavon going up so why can't they change the rules again and let these two sides go up this season.

The supporters that these two sides have are greater than the Scottish sides who were allowed to play this year. Surely this would be beneficial to both the clubs and the WRU financially?

Now I am putting my soap box away and am waking up from my dream to face reality!

I hope that Aberavon fail on Saturday and we win the division, however I feel that we should have walked the title given the players in our squad. Not only do we have players earning far more than other 1st div players but we have many earning far more than they could earn in the premiership. The old man Mark Jones has been a waste of the vast amount of money he gets paid.I was told at Tondu last night that on average the Aberavon squad receive £25 appearence money and £25 win bonus and extra £100 if they win the league.

The outside world expects Ponty to make it to be playoffs and not Aberavon.

But playing against Caerphilly will not be easy.

True, they were demolished up-front against Ebbw Vale last night, but then the way that the Ebbw forwards played Pontypool or Aberavon would also have crumpled. Yet despite that, Caerphilly looked very comfortable with ball in hand. Flankers weren't great last night, but Andrew Williams at number eight showed that if they do get ball he is a lot quicker than Marco and equally difficult to tackle.

The game against Caerphilly will be a simple test of whether Pontypool is ready for the next jump. If the Ponty forwards can't put the squeeze on the Caer forwards, I expect the Castlemen to have the edge behind. If they can dominate up-front, evens slightly, I expect them to edge the game at Pontypool park. I can't call the away match.

It all adds up to an absorbing two encounters.

I know its pessimistic but I think that aberavon will reach their total with some ease against what will probably be a demoralised dunvant side.We might of had a chance if they had to play in similar conditions as what we had against tondu, but the forecast is dry and sunny.I'd just like to say well done to the poola lads for some great entertaining rugby in the last few games and here's hoping we can keep the squad together for next season.

A serious question - can we loan a few players to Dunvant? I am sure they would prefer that than losing by a record score in their last game of the season.

I do belieive that Dunfant will be relegated to the second div, and problable has gone on holiday by now. so it will be a walk over for Aberavon. Their West Wales friends.
Well done Poola you have done us proud this season.

Firstly, well done to Aberavon !

I was one of the many POOLA fans at Tondu. From 60 mins onwards it was embarrassing. The Aberavon players scored 3 to 4 tries without a defensive hand getting near them, As for running a penalty from within their own 22 in injury time and conceding a try, well that was about it for me !

You can't expect teams with nothing to play for at this point of the season to try too hard. And regrettably, the same will happen on Saturday. Dunvant will concede more than 14 tries, I have doubt about that.

Good luck to Aberavon against the Castlemen.

Well done to our boys for this season and a big big thank you to Mr Jude. We must learn the lessons from this season and take it forward. We must learn not to be too complacent against the so -called lesser teams.

I call on all the clubs to ensure that at the forthcoming EGM, the 1 division remain semi-pro and that they vote for AUTOMATIC promotion to the premier league for the Div 1 winners! We must end the mockery of the player -offs !

PS: Can a Dunvant committee person post something positive on here? Just a glimmer of hope for us fanatical fans?

For what it's worth, and with the fan in mind who asked for a glimmer of hope.... I dreamt recently that Bravon scored 13 tries in their final game, and one of their wings knocked on with the line at his mercy in the last minute of injury time. Then the ref immediately blew the final whistle. I know, wishful thinking, probably. But you never do know.......do you??

Well done Pooler. Since that slip-up against Rhymney we could not have asked for more from the team than they have produced.
But what a mockery this play-off requirement against Caerphilly makes of League Rugby in Wales. Is there any other league anywhere in the World, in soccer or rugby, which requires the champions of a league to play-off against the bottom team from the higher division to 'earn' promotion. What purpose does the play-off serve other than to protect the already over-protected.Whoever wins the 1st division championship will have earned promotion, all Caerphilly have earned is relegation, not another bite at the cherry that the play-off gives them. I would go further and state that both Aberavon and Pontypool have earned the right to dine at the rich man's table that is the Premier division. Heres is the chance for the WRU to wake up and smell the flowers and promote both Aberavon and Pontypool to create a more competitive, 10 club, Premier division. The play-off requirement is both immoral and unjustifiable, but if we can not change it and we do win the 1st division then let us hope that all our squad are fit and we can prove yet again against Caerphilly that we should be in the Premier.

So the end of the season has reared it's ugly head again, I have been routing for you to win the Div 1 title all season. Being an Ebbw supporter I have followed Poola when Ebbw have been away, and also when other fixtures don't coincide. I have every faith that you will take the title this weekend, and wish you all the best in your playoff against Caer!!. What an exciting run-in, it has been nip an tuck all season, sometimes finding it hard to put a 'fag paper' between you and Aberavon. What great ambassadors you and Aberavon have been to Division 1 Rugby!.

I was quite optimistic that we had done enough before last night but I have a sneeky feeling that Aberavon will do it on Sat. Whilst this is a hugely disappointing prospect we must be proud of the team for their fantastic efforts this term. Pontypool's teams of the past would have been proud of the way went about the 32 games this year. We all know that pooler are one of the biggest names in rugby and surely deserve a lot better than we rae getting from the WRU at the moment. Fair play to Aberavon they are in the same boat and they deserve to be up there with us! The Scottish sides offered nothing and brought insignificant crowds to the likes of Cardiff, Bridgend, Llanelli. What we would offered eh!?

Fingers crossed and lets hope Dunvant have an element of pride - relegated or not they are still rugby players aren't they?

After 30 games who would have thought that it would have come to this? Both aberavon and Pontypool are drawing on points but Aberavon are 10 14 trys behind. To be truthfull I don't think that it is looking to good for POOLER, Well any way it doesnt matter who wins because this has been a epic season. But I think bald Paul is right if Aberavon come second they will change the rules so they go up but if pooler win they wont chane it and that isnt fair well any ways i wishthe best off luck to both teams in the closing stages.

Before my hubbie starts to worry, let me just say that this has nothing to do with any one man. No, it's a whole squad of rugby players!!! I have been a little quiet on the website front recently.....how cam you speak when your heart is constantly in your mouth?? THE game tonight was the last thing on my mind when I went to sleep on Tuesday, the first thing on my mind when I woke this morning, and the only thing I've been able to think about all bloomin' day!! There must be a medical term for this...." Pooler Pooler Syndrome" or some such title! Am I the only one afflicted by this disease,or has everybody come down with it today? As you have probably gathered, I don't really have anything intelligent to say to everyone this evening, but am desperately trying to kill time and take my mind off things. So be warned.... depending on the result at Tondu this evening, you might have to put up with more inane drivel between now and 4.30pm on Saturday!!!!!

I would just like to say that everybody in the division has been mightily impressed with the form shown by Pontypool since your surprise defeat at our hands. Who would have thought on that day that you would be sitting pretty today at the top of the table offering Aberavon only the slightest of chances to pip you by scoring what I see as a near-impossible avalanche of tries. I can’t honestly foresee them doing it and I am confident in congratulating you as champions. You deserve it and also deserve promotion but I am sorry to say that I don’t think you are going to get it. Whilst your squad is certainly capable of beating Caerphilly I have to say that everything about this ridiculous play-off format is in their favour. They will approach these games fresh, prepared, focused and on a promise of a significant financial reward (I know this because more than one Caerphilly player has told me so) to beat you. Your players after an arduous, hard fought campaign must be tiring now and to produce form enough to beat a Premier Division side over two-legs is asking too much. The whole play-off idea smacks of unfairness, is depressingly typical of the WRU and if tried anywhere else in the world would be laughed out of court. You could play superbly well and beat Caerphilly at home by say seven points but how big an advantage is this to take into the second game. One quick try by the opposition and your eighty minutes of toil at home means nothing. I have played against both Pontypool and Caerphilly this season and there is little between the two teams but if I was a betting man I would have to plump for the Castletown men. I sincerely hope that I am wrong and that you achieve your deserved status in the Premier Division. You have certainly done it the hard way and your inclusion in the top division would be one in the neck for the spectacularly incompetent WRU and the gang of pric*s. Its just a pity Neath didn’t clinch the title last night and make a real mockery of them and their plans.

Great performance last night from the team, we could`nt really have hoped for any more. Before the last 2 games I honestly felt we would do very well to get about 15 tries ahead of Aberavon,to be 24 ahead is a fantastic achievement.
If 24 will be enough remains to be seen ,tonights game holds the key .It all depends on the attitude of the Tondu team if they are already thinking about their summer hols then we could be in big trouble ! Becouse I would`nt be surprised if half of Dunvant`s relegated team are already on the beach !!
Fingers crossed then,if Tondu could hold them to under 6 tries we are in with a shout .
Whatever happens whoever wins the title will deserve it !!
But as someone else said on here if the WRU had any sense (contradiction in terms really isn`t it !!) the champions should go up and the runner`s up should then play off with Caerphilly ,at least then we would have a top tier with 10 clubs (an odd number seems stupid ).
But I suppose that would make too much sense for the WRU..

There have been some nail-biters as we all know but the team spirit and commitment generally has been excellent. A good example is the way the team bounced back after the disappointment of the Rhymney performance. Some of the tries that we've seen scored have been right out of the top drawer and any side would have been pleased to have scored them. Promotion-chasing Pontypool make a call to arms
PONTYPOOL team manager Tony Clark has called for a big crowd at Pontypool Park tonight to help spur his team into the First Division play-off and a tilt at a return to the Premier flight.

Pooler are in the driving seat with a ten-try cushion over fellow title challengers Aberavon, but fear the Wizards could stack up a lot of touchdowns in their final game against relegated Dunvant.

With this in mind, Pontypool need to win their last game by as many tries as possible against Bonymaen and believe a big crowd will help.

"I am asking as many as people as possible to come along tonight and spur us towards our goal," said Clark.

"It has been several years since we last played in the Premiership. Our aim has always been to return there, and there's no doubt the fans can help.

"Their support away from home this season has been terrific and worth 10 points a match to us. We must win well tonight and they can play a vital part."

Clark has called on his team for "more of the same" after massive wins in their last two home games.

"We must win the game first and then go for the tries," he said. "But I don't think it will be as easy against Bonymaen because they have a more abrasive front row than Whitland.

"They also have excellent players behind such as Adrian Killer (scrum half) and Chris Batsford (wing). We know all about Chris as he scored a lot of tries for us one season.

"I know we have a ten-try advantage, but Aberavon have a game in hand (they have to play Tondu away tomorrow and Dunvant on Saturday) and the Dunvant game could be a spoke in the cog.

"I had hoped Dunvant would go into that game with something to play for, but they haven't, except some players may be playing for contracts.

"It's also a bit of a West Wales derby and that could mean something.

"But it's up to us to increase the pressure on them, and then, if they know they have a lot of tries to score, it could make them anxious and force mistakes."

Stuart Lawrence has a bump on his arm and is the only slight worry for tonight's game, Pontypool naming their side just before the 7.15pm kick-off (players to meet at ground at 5.45pm).

Firstly, hats off to the team on Saturday. It was a superb performance and one that would have sent shivers down Aberavon's spine. But we must not rest on our laurels and need to do the same tonight. I thought the crowd really got behind the team and it really seems to make a difference to the intensity of the boy's performance. Having said that, at such a crucial stage in the season and with such glorious weather I was surprised that the crowd wasn't bigger. Yes I know it was the FA Cup final but c'mon lets get our priorities right. I'll be driving over the Bridge again tonight to be at the Park come rain or shine. This is our most important game for many years so lets make the effort to get there in numbers and shout ourselves hoarse. The boys are playing their 4th game in 11 days so they need a good vocal crowd to get behind them and keepthe momentum going. Don't be put off by the weather. It's only rain!
Good luck Pooler - we'll be right behind you!

Pontypool 81 Whitland 16

PONTYPOOL banished memories of their humbling defeat against Whitland last autumn and with it laid down the gauntlet to title rivals Aberavon with a glittering display at the Park on Saturday.

Pooler cooked up the sweetest of try feasts for their fans who turned out in force, despite the FA Cup Final, for this crucial league fixture. And in glorious conditions the Red, Black and Whites didn't disappoint as they trounced Whitland with 13 tries to record their highest points score of the season and with it reclaim their place at the top of Division One.

In a match blemished by only two Whitland scores Pooler gave their biggest hint yet that they are ready for top flight Welsh rugby. Tactically they showed all the hallmarks of an SAS crack unit - focused on victory first and scoring tries later.

Superior fitness meant this was ultimately a stroll in the park for the promotion hopefuls.

After a succession of gain-line-breaking mauls and drives Pooler's forwards found the time and space to join the ever confident attacking backline as it continually punished Whitland's fragile and often heated defence.

So rattled were the West Wales outfit that hooker Steve Gerrard was sin binned close to half time for persistent offending.

They were never in this game despite netting two tries and Pooler knew it, leading at half time 43-6 thanks to seven tries.

Man of the half was the electric Lennie Woodard. The unstoppable winger haunted Whitland and bagged a hat trick of tries to the delight of the home fans.

Woodard's speed and strength posed Whitland all sorts of problems as their tackles were in vain.

Full back Stuart Lawrence, captain and number eight Mark Jones, centre Stephen John and lock Gareth Taylor all chipped in with similar scores of their own as Pooler showed no signs of stepping off the accelerator.

Centre Ben Jeffries was one of the game's big success stories. In both halfs he provided valuable space and time with his crunching gain line breaks. Renowned for his power he also showed good turns of speed, especially after the break when he blazed up field with a scorching break. Nicky Lloyd was in support to finish the lighting move to score one of his side's seven second half tries.

Wing Woodard added two to his tally - the best when he burst through a hapless Whitland defence from deep to jet over. Lock Taylor got his brace as Pooler slipped into cruise control. Alongside Mike Powell the pair ruled the roost in the lineout providing the platform for Jeffries and John both to score tries.

In recent weeks Pontypool have looked unbeatable. And with just one game left and sitting pretty at the top of the table they look to have peaked at just the right time.

Pontypool - S Lawrence (40 D Smith), L Woodard, B Jeffries, J Hawker, S John, B Hayward, N Lloyd (G Jenkins 75), A Phillips (G Jenkins 52), C Thomas, L Mustoe, G Taylor, M Powell (K Faletau 52), M Tu'ipulotu (A Howarth 52) C Trayhern, M Jones (S Waldron 50m)

Scorers: tries - L Woodard 5, S John 2, G Taylor 2, S Lawrence, B Jeffries, N Lloyd, M Jones. Cons - B Hayward 8.

Whitland - W Lewis, S Bitchers, D Setaro, S Tuihalamaka (R Davies 65m), G Morris, D Griffiths, R Phillips, G Williams, S Gerrard, D Jones, A Jakeman, D Ebsworth, R Norton, R Williams, D Thomas.

Scorers: tries - S Butchers, G Williams. Pen - D Griffiths. Drop Goal - D Griffiths.

Well done to the many supporters from both great clubs for the way in which they have conducted themselves. People should support their own team and not have a go at the opposition. Regardless of the team fielded by Whitland, Pooler did well to score so many tries. The bottom line being that Aberavon should kick themselves for loosing at Whitland, had we won it wouldn,t have come to this.

Big thank you to all the superb players for the performance against Whitland. In 25 years of watching the POOLER this has to rank as one of the most disciplined, focussed and skillful displays I can remember.
The whole team were inspirational but I have to single out Big Ben who was awsome, Nicky for his spirit and Gareth for dominating the line-out.
I'm sure we can continue in the same manner against Bonymaen. I booked a Holiday in Devon for next week but am seriously considering coming back for that match.
Hope all the rugby people in our Great Town turn out to cheer the lads on. By the way, let's also get down to Tondu on Wednesday to support the home side.

Come on the POOLER !!!!!!!

Great performance yesterday form everyone involved. Some people were questioning the wisdom of making changes when the team seemed to be in full flow but we still ended up scoring thirteen tries and protected some key players from unnecessary injury. Another great performance on Tuesday and the pressure will really be on Aberavon. Is it really such an advantage to be playing after us if we've managed to pull off two superb performances and scored a heap of tries in the process.

To round Saturday off, Dad and I sat down to watch the comedy that was Swansea against Cardiff. I thought Saturday evening Variety shows had ended a long time ago. How much are those players being paid? As the saying goes, I wouldn't pay them in washers!!!!

This is a question to Webmaster and anyone else concerned.

Does the GUESTBOOK serve any purpose ? I understand the idea, but it seems to attract morons who get a kick out of writing pathetic and coarse comments unrelated to the club or rugby. It does nothing for our image and provides a problem for those of us with young children. Comments made on this board have been monitored and I know individuals have been warned about language etc in the past.

A minority of users access the gustbook for its correct purpose. Please access it to see what I am talking about.

Can anything be done ? or am I just being too prudish ?

Just checked in to see how many tries you scored today - 13 makes it that bit tougher for us to win the league and it would be a lot easier if you arranged for a 0-0 draw next week !!! :-)
Seriously I know that you'll play to the last second of injury time, which is the way it should be. It may be an advantage for us to know how many we've got to score but that brings it's own pressures.
If we hold our nerve and form in our two games, we win and we'd deserve it - if we don't outscore you, you win and you deserve it, c'est la vie.

Just watched Swansea and Cardiff on the box. What an atrocious game, a terrible advert for the Welsh Premier division and the Gang of Six in particular if this is the best they can serve up for the benefit of Welsh Rugby with all that money they waste. Skill level was extremely low, the game was full of mistakes, the tactical kicking was abysmal and both teams seemed to lack any game plan or direction. The referee and linesmen weren't much better either. The referee allowed Peter Rogers to go over the top of a ruck and kill the ball on at least three occassions without penalising him, and since when has a player only been given a warning after throwing a punch, should have been another yellow card for Craig Quinnell, and then the linesmen disallowed a conversion by Arwel Thomas which was clearly over, and disallowed a perfectly good try. The best thing the referee did was to blow the final whistle and put me out of my misery.

Mr. Webmaster, please pass my thanks and appreciation on to the players for their magnificent efforts, skill and commitment over the season and especially over the last 3 matches when they have been outstanding. Another such effort next Tuesday and we will have really thrown down the gauntlet to Aberavon to perform in their last two matches. Also a special mention to BIG BEN for his performance today. Ben is not always appreciated and when he does get a game he usually hasn't played for a while. Today we saw the benefit of Ben having had a run in the team with a few recent games under his belt. He continuously broke their first line of defence, dragging in players, putting the opposition on the back foot and providing quick ruck ball. He also made a couple of lovely breaks and scored a great try. Well done Ben.

WELL DONE POOLER a great afternoon Gareth Taylor was outstanding as were most of the team 113 tries I don't think the ref saw the late one on Byron (it was a nasty one wasn't it) but the touch judge saw it and bottled it
It's not fair that Aberavon can play there last two matches knowing what they have to do but if pooler score another hatfull of tries Tuesday hopefuly it will put the wind up them and they will blow it

81-16. Great win. We seem to be getting it right at last and could eve have scored more than the 13 tries we did. Gareth Taylor was outstanding - probably the best performance I have seen from a pooler player for years. If we had played Ben Jeffries & Chris Thomas from the start of the season, we would not have been in this position we would have won the league outright already. Great effort Pooler. When slug came on we only won two out of 10. Come on. My argument is that he has had enough chances. We will struggle with a poor lineout display tonight!!! I can't believe this decision.

POOLER ON REVENGE MISSION
PONTYPOOL will be hoping their worst nightmare doesn't return to haunt them this Saturday.

The promotion hopefuls face dark horses Whitland in a game that is destined to evoke some painful memories for Pooler's players and army of fans.

In October a seemingly unbeatable Pontypool side was beaten away at the West Wales minnows 19-13 - a defeat they are hungry to avenge.

"Of course we want and have to win Saturday's game against Whitland. It was a gut-wrenching defeat down there and one that was a massive shock for all of us," team manager Tony Clarke confessed.

He continued: "It's going to be a difficult game. They have some good players but their game plan is simple - they will try to kill the ball every time it is loose.

"Robert Norton is one of their key forwards and a back row forward I rate very highly. We will need to watch him."

Still on a high after Tuesday night's emphatic demolition of Tondu at the Park, Pontypool know they still have everything to play for. And Clarke admitted that scoring tries was at the forefront of their minds.

"We need to secure victory first, by spreading the ball away from their pack. But if we can open up a comfortable lead then I believe we can let the flood gates open on the try front. We did that against Tondu. Once we knew the result was ours at half time, we set about scoring tries - which we did," Clarke explained.

Whitland have been Division One's bogey side with the notable scalps of Pontypool and Aberavon.

Clarke admitted they do pose a threat and that Pooler's fans could play a massive part in bagging all three points this Saturday at Pontypool Park (2.30pm).

"You always have to be wary of Whitland, that's why we need our fans out in force. They are the extra player that can mean all the difference to us," Clarke revealed. Top scoring wing Len Woodard, needing just two tries to be the division's leading try scorer, returns to the Pontypool side.

Pontypool: S Lawrence, L Woodard, A N Other, J Hawker, S John, B Hayward, N Lloyd, A Phillips, L Jones/C Thomas, L Mustoe/G Gunter, G Taylor, M Powell, M Tuipulotu, C Trayherne, M Jones. Replacements from rest of squad. Meet ground 12.45pm.

So no Scottish teams next year and an odd number of teams in the premier This should be the key to offer two teams the chance of going up and make it ten we could go up as champions and Aberavon could play the bottom side in a play off (I wounder who that will be against)
Of course its not going to happen that would mean one more team to share in the money

Well here we are 2 matches left and we are still in with a shout,I still can`t believe what a good performance we put on against Tondu .Nine tries in those conditions was a fantastic effort, and to make it better Aberavon only managed 12 against Merthyr, they were capable of scoring a lot more.So the differance is only 3 tries when it could have been 10 or more.
But I still feel Saturday`s game is a real banana skin, potentially anyway . Whitland are playing so well at the moment, just to beat them would be great result. The Bonymaen game is one where maybe we could rattle up a few tries ,but they are not an easy side to play against.
Aberavon in their remaining games should beat Tondu away, although if they do I don`t believe they will score a great deal of tries. But the game in Dunvant who could be relegated by this point should be a walkover for them. We scored 10 tries down there and it could easily have been 15 with more assured handling.
There may be a few more twists during the next week or so,let`s just hope lady luck is smiling down on us !!!

The news that the Scottish sides have been kicked out of the top flight next season has no bearing on what will happen to the Division One champions this season - i.e. playoffs will go ahead. A reliable source has said that the top flight teams will not want to increase the size of their division as it would mean their pot of money would be spread even further. The bottom line is, on the evenings of Friday May 17th and Friday May 24th the playoff between the Division One champions and bottom Welsh side in the Welsh Scottish league will go ahead. The winner of these (it has yet to be confirmed whether tries or points difference will be used to differentiate the teams if both win one apiece), will then be in the top flight next season, consisting of 9 teams only, all Welsh. Division One will have 18 teams, an extra one from this season as three are being promoted from Division Two.

Anyone know the EXACT number of tries Pooler have scored this season? I see some sources are saying we're equal with Bravon on tries, while other tables showed we were ahead on try count before the Tondu game. This discrepancy could become crucial very soon if promotion is decided on the try count. Not that I'm complacent. The important thing to do now is first to win the remaining games. But has anyone got the real try count??

I have inside knowledge that Richard Hill will be joining Pooler as backs coach if Pooler get promotion.

Excellent performance this evening. It could easily have turned into a low scoring slog, but there was a huge amount of effort from all the players. 56 points is difficult to score on a sunny afternoon let alone the conditions out there this evening.

I am sure that staff from Aberavon were at the Park, probably more interested in their forthcoming game against Tondu. With resepct to Tondu they did keep on trying, but surely more will be needed against Aberavon for an upset.

Everyone played well, but it is great to see Dai Smith string a few games together, he really is a quality player. I also think that Manu gave a 'drop me if you dare' performance and Nicky Lloyd was excellent value as ever.

In an attempt to clear up any confusion I have borrowed this following statement from another clubs website.
As of April 2002, the promotion/relegation rules for Division One are as follows - the team that finishes top of Division One will have a home and away playoff against the bottom Welsh team in the Welsh Scottish League at the end of the season (May 17th and May 24th are penciled in). The winner of the playoffs will take a place in the Welsh Scottish League for the 2002-2003 season with the loser playing in Division One. The last two teams in Division One (i.e. teams finishing in 16th and 17th) will be relegated to Division Two at the end of the season. Three teams will be promoted from Division Two to form a 18 team Division One for the 2002-2003 season.

League points are awarded as follows : 3 points for a win ; 1 point for a draw ; no points for a defeat.

League positions are worked out in this order : League points, number of tries, points difference.

Last season's final league standings are shown in brackets next to the teams (All are Division One standings unless otherwise stated).

A few points, and I hope that I am not tempting fate with these queries:

1. Is it fair that Aberavon have two games left after our last match against Bonymaen? Isn't this a little unfair due to the obvious advantage it brings? Surely, the WRU should ensure that the last match of the season are played at exact same times? I see that the Premiership mentioned that they would have explored the concept had Liverpool not lost at Spurs on Saturday. Sorry, my mistake - comparing an efficient league management with the WRU !?! But seriously, our management should approach the WRU.

2. As per another query on the website, is it tries or points difference that is critical if points awarded are level. Have we checked to ensure that the tables are correct since I'm sure that there have been articles in the Wales on Sunday previously where the WRU have confirmed that there published tables have been wrong!

3. As a team, we have been prone to some complacency at times this season. Shouting the score onto players is a vital aspect at this time of the season. Maybe we even need a member of the committee at Aberavon matches to ensure that we know exactly what we need to do? For instance, if Aberavon are losing at Merthyr on Wednesday (yes, highly unlikely - but anything is possible) should we play safety first rugby aganst Tondu at that same time rather than chasing tries? OK, maybe a little OTT, but surely we need to be fully informed at all times!

Good luck boys, lets ensure we take unassailable leads and then run those tries in.

To our friends at pontypool once again we are neck and neck
at division 1. Both sides want each other to slip up but let us never forget whoever reaches the final goal the six clubs and the wru who tried to put a stop to us getting back on top of welsh rugby.
ITS PAY BACK TIME good luck for the last 2 games but the wizards are out in force.Lets stick it up to the so called gang of six.

good win yesterday, gareth taylor played well in the line outs and in open play, nicky lloyd looked sharp again, byrons kicking was good and Manu getting over the advantage line like he always does. well done pooler lets keep the pressure going on aberavon.

An excellent performance in a game that looked quite difficult before hand. I have already entered my vote for player of the season, however, I thought that Gareth Taylor really showed the way today. I also thought that Ben started using his best atribute, with some crunching tackles and forceful runs. I overheard someone say that Aberavon were leading by 53 points to 3 at half time, quite pleassed to see the actual result was not so dramatic.

Is anyone else from Pooler going to the games that Aberavon have, after ours are completed to support the opposition?

I stand by my choice of Nicky Lloyd but I understand why you would disagree with me Cai Trayharn (hope I spelt it right) has had an outstanding season and to name others Mike Powell has been great Slugg has had is moments and is far better away from home (could it be the slagging he gets at home matches has an effect I think so he works his socks off for the team lets support him and maybe we can help him develop into the top player he is going to be with Pontypool and not a gang of six club)
Anyway as I wrote my choice is Nicky Lloyd your choice is up to you but the most important thing is

The only way I can see us winning the league is for Aberavon to slip up away to Tondu. That said, we have to do our bit and win our 4 games too!!
They have by far the easier run in so will score a hatful more tries than us.

Here's my view on how the last 4 games will go for both teams.....

Bedwas Vs Pooler - Pooler win, score 3-4 tries
Aberavon Vs Bonymaen - Aberavon win, score 6+ tries
Pooler Vs Tondu - Pooler win (just!!), score 2 tries
Merthyr Vs Aberavon - Aberavon win, score 8-10 tries
Pooler Vs Whitland - Pooler win, score 1 or 2 tries
Tondu Vs Aberavon - Tondu win (I hope!!!), score 1 try
Pooler Vs Bonymaen - Pooler win, score 6+ tries
Aberavon Vs Dunvant - Aberavon win, score 6+ tries

C'mon Pooler u got 2 tough matches there, lets make sure we are focussed and push Aberavon all the way.
We need our strongest team for every game and keep the changes to a minimum.

Pooler, Pooler!!!!

I have to agree with you Bald Paul - it's Nicky LLoyd for player of the year. It's a difficult choice with quite a few players standing out but Nicky gives 100% every game and ALWAYS acknowledges the support of the fans. If Gareth Taylor had been with us a bit longer I may have picked him but there you go. Well done to all the squad who've got us into a good position - NOW LETS GO FOR IT BIG TIME!!!
P.S. will the 'supporter' who keeps abusing the ref, linesman, opposition players, etc. please STOP - you are embarrassing the rest of us. Support, encouragement, good natured banter - yes, obnoxious comments - no thanks!

I have watched Pooler play maybe 15-16 times this year and one player had impressed more than any other.

Byron has had a good season,
Nicky Lloyd has cemented his place in the team,
Dai Smith has looked our most dangerous attacker (when he has played!)
Pikey Powell would have stood a chance for the award but for his lack of disipline (Pike you stupid boy!)

But the one player who has played well in every game I have seen him play this season is Cae Trehearn.

He doesn't take the ball up, he doesn't ruck ot maul, he doesn't jump in the lineout, or add much weight to our scrummage.

But the boy puts his body on the line everygame. He tackles his heart out. He distrupts the opposition's game and infuriates them. He scavenges on the floor and wins valuable quick ball that is ideal for counter-attacking.

In conclusion he's a real pain in the arse! (Very much in the George Smith mould)

Winnie Moa and James Taylor have NOT been sacked; they are both important members of our squad.

Tony is a close friend of mine and I feel he is very competent at his job, he is supposed to Manage the team…….the team respect and respond to him.

If the club wish him to take on extra responsibilities out side his working contract such as spokes person then that is up to them.

Tony is very good with mind games and does try to take the pressure of the boys. Do you see Alex Ferguson, Bobby Robson etc saying they are going to win every thing??? Mind games…………

He has my full backing perhaps if SOME supporters looked out side the box they would see this. Has Bob Jude every let us down? I can only commend Bob on every thing he has done for this club. If he thought Tony was doing a bad job then he would of released him.

How can a team top of the table equal on points get so much abuse by their own fans? (I know it is a minority.)

Every one is entitled to their opinion this is the reason the message board is here, however lets be a little more positive. If a player steps out of line he will be spoken to I think this is GOOD management don’t you?

Good win yesterday boys well done.

Well, it's all up for grabs again now. We have our destiny in our hands but we must be clinical in finishing off our moves. So many tries went begging today that we could have been top had we capitalise on our missed chances. Still, never mind, Aberavon have slipped up and left it open and that's not something we could have anticipated a week ago.

One downside to today. What was wrong with the PA system again? Its not the first time this season this has happened, I don't blame the club, it's not their facility but it does make us look poor when none of us know who is playing, who has scored, been replaced, etc. Hopefully this tired out old system will be replaced next season when the redevelopments take place and about time.

It's Bedwas next week, it'll be tough but we must win and win well. My belief is that if we get into a comfortable winning lead then we should not bother with conversions should we score further tries. It takes up time and with the promotion battle so close maybe we have to make certain sacrifices. I believe it will be a sacrifice worth making for the bigger prize.

I have updated my page to include a report on the Blackwood game. Log on to :-

Great results all round today.

I have to say that the performance was very poor. We went about our game as if we had nothing to play for. Disappointed with the crowd too for a local derby.

Time to regroup, both team and supporters. Let's start making some noise. Potentially, if we win all our remaining games, we will be six points ahead, with Aberavon having to win the last two games to take the championship.

Now that's pressure !!!!!!!

Marvellous, what a result from Whitland .They are really starting to get to grips with the intensity if div.1 rugby. The only pity is we are playing them soon ,and their confidence will now be sky high and gunning for the double against us also !
A good derby win for us today, games against blackwood are never easy. How many tries did we score ? Are we still behind Aberavon on tries ?
At least the league is back in the melting pot but there are still some difficult fixtures to come ,(and aberavon do have a couple of games where potentially they could run in a lot of tries).

Mr. Webmaster, I am also a concerned fan, but my concern is the very personal and obscene verbal assault of our Team Manager on this website by a foul-mouthed individual who claims to be 'A Concerned Fan'. He appears to have a personal problem with our Team Manager, perhaps he took away his dummy at the gate before a match. It is very difficult to identify the individual concerned as he has not the guts to sign his own name, but I believe every effort should be made to do so and ban this individual. We do not want 'fans' like him. I do not believe that our Team Manager should lower himself to respond to these insults, but since they seem to revolve around the case of Uni Moa and his supposed sacking, can we yet again have your official re-assurance that Uni has not been sacked and what is specifically the situation with respect to Uni. The truth is better than rumours.

Pooler waiting to pounce on title
PONTYPOOl'S objective in their last five games is clear - to win them all and hope Aberavon slip to hand them the First Division title.

Aberavon have shown no signs of faltering so far with 20 league wins in a row. Both sides have similar run-ins, Aberavon facing Whitland away on Saturday, then travel to Tondu and struggling Bonymaen and Dunvant at home with Pontypool facing Blackwood at home tomorrow, Bedwas away and Tondu, Whitland and Bonymaen at home.

But Pontypool team manager Tony Clarke said: "We are not looking at Aberavon's fixtures. We have to win our last five, keep the pressure on them and hope they crack. "It won't be easy for them at Whitland on Saturday. They may not like the way Whitland go about things and Whitland will be trying really hard (after a run of five wins and a draw in their last six games).

But Blackwood are no pushovers for Pontypool. "I think it will be a hard battle up front," said Clarke. "They'll try to take us on there and the first 20 minutes will be crucial with a battle for supremacy.

"Everything goes by the board with a Gwent derby, even if it's top against the bottom, and there are a lot of such clashes in our division.

"We've just got to keep plugging on, keep our heads in gear and get as many wins as we can. I don't think the title race is over yet."

Blackwood's victory over Tondu in their last match was only their second this season against a side above them in the table and now they have got the taste they aim to continue the trend in their remaining games.

"Three of our last four games are against sides above us in the table," said coach Mark Thomas.

"If we are to finish in the top half and set a platform for next season these are the sides we have to beat and that's our aim.

"It will be very tough at Pontypool, we know that. Although they have suffered a couple of surprise home defeats they usually lift their game against other Gwent sides. "But nevertheless we will go there with confidence. We will wear the underdogs tag, and that suits us. All the pressure is on Pontypool.

"We will have a few youngsters playing at Pontypool Park for the first time and I will just tell them to go out and enjoy themselves. If we play to our potential we can be in the game all the way through."

David Smith (hamstring twinge) and Manu Tuipulotu (hand injury) are out of the Pontypool line-up.

How sad to watch (even as a Pooler Fan) the demise of Merthyr in this fashion. The players should feel ashamed of themselves when they look at today's papers and see the reports. However, those players who did turn out did Merthyr proud. They never gave up and the reason Wales on Sunday can say the biggest cheer of the day came for their try is probably because most Pooler fans cheered with them.

As I left the game I heard some Pooler fans doing nothing short of taking the p**s at the guy collecting the flags. Lest we forget boys? When our players left in droves it was not nice, I hope ur as ashamed as the Merthyr absentees when you think about your pathetic attempts at fun.

To any Merthyr fans reading this.... I hope you sort out your problems and rise again. Good luck to you from the many true Pooler fans over here im sure goes without saying.

As for the game the only down side for us was.... sodding Llanharran being well below par too!!!!

Pooler 4 eva!!!!!!!!!!!!!
