? Fishline Hem -- Sonja, 04:43:33 10/14/09 Wed [1]

I saw a dress that has very wavy medium sized curls. I have tried cutting the material in a circle but the curls are too small and doesnt lift up the way it should I want the curls to look very round and medium sized.
I also want to use two materials (both organza) the top one dark and the bottom one light coloured so when I sew the fishing line in it must basically lift so that both colours show in the hoops.
Please help me Ive been battling with this for a week. Ive tried fishing line and thin wire...
What size fishing line must I use, and am I cutting the material right?
:) Please Please please help me.

It makes a HUGE difference what test weight the fishing line is.

Sometimes, I wrap my fishing line very tightly around a drumstick or a wooden spoon handle and boil the fishing line for a minute or two. When it cools down, I can sew with it like normal, but it makes the edges a lot more curly and prettier...

Could someone tell me how I sew the fishline in and make that hem at the bottom of the dress? I can make the dress and decorate it and it looks really good but I can not figure out what you guys do to make that hem at the bottom. Is there a special attachment for my sewing machine?

I use a rolled hem on my serger, but you can use a rolled hem presser foot with your sewing machine and use the zigzag stitch. It takes longer to do and alot of getting used to it too.

It's because you have to hold your threads when first starting to sew, when you don't they can catch and create what is called a "birds nest"

Felt it going to give you the most firmness (body) to the fabric. Any other fabric you use will be very limp, but I am assuming you will be using many crinolines to give you the "poof" needed. Providing you use ample crinolines, any good bodied fabric should work for you.

There is a foot for your sewing machine that allows you to do the rolled hem, or you can place the fishline at the edge and follow the end over the fishline slightly and do small zig zag stitch over the edge. I got fustated with both ways and bought a serger witch is faster and easier.

Help -- mom (help), 18:18:19 05/08/09 Fri [1]

When you dye a white dress the has clear beads on it will they remain as they are or will they be changed? They are small clear ones. Also, I bought a new black dress for my daughter and she loved it. It is made out of what looks to black strech netting on the outsideof the dress and the underneath is like a slip you would under a dress or skirts. Any ideas?

Need help repairing cupcake skirt -- Pam, 18:34:15 01/27/09 Tue [1]

I bought a dress and the ruffles on the underskirt are terrible. I love the top, so I am going to try and replace the ruffles. I have practiced sewing in the fishing line and have that under control. My question is...what is the best way to cut lots of bias strips for the ruffles? And how much material does it take to ruffle up two layers on a size 7/8 skirt? I also took up the waist from 28" to 24" but it is still stretching. The waistband is super stretch, which is common in these skirts. But when its on, it stretches and skoots down. Any help appreciated...

Help!! I have lost the formula amounts for dyeing!! -- Confused, 07:12:16 04/01/07 Sun [6]

Is it 2 bottles of paint to 1 bottle of fabric medium? Last time I dyed shawl & I did it in a large tub. This time I have several pieces to dye to make a sportswear outfit. Is it best to use my washer? Do I need to rinse immediately after dyeing or do I wait till it is dry? Is there anyway to "save" some of the liquid in case I need to dye any additional ribbons, etc? [> Re: Help!! I have lost the formula amounts for dyeing!! -- sewing mommy, 18:17:46 04/01/07 Sun [1]

Hi, I actually dyed several types of fabrics all yellow this past weekend using apple barrel paints. I did use 1 bottle of fabric medium to every 2 bottles of paint. I used my washing machine, set on medium and warm water. I started the water running and added in the paint and medium. Then I mixed it with my hands, then I let the washer agitate it for a minute or so and stopped it then added my fabric. I only let the fabric sit in for about 10 mins then tossed it in the dryer with some old but clean towels and let the fabric almost dry, then repeated the process until I had the color I wanted. Just make sure to clean your washer and dryer afterwards. No rinsing is necessary. Just make sure you do heat set the paint otherwise it may come off. Good Luck!

[> [> [> Yes you can save the solution c/i -- sewing mommy, 16:03:29 04/06/07 Fri [1]

what I actually do is after I am done dying everything, I let the washer agitate a couple mins then I used the large bottles from the fabric medium (empty of course) and I fill up a couple of them with the paint mixture to save. They keep well that way. Just make sure to shake them up if you need to dye anything else.

[> [> [> [> Important Warning about saving dye mixture c/i -- Jennifer, 06:27:36 04/24/07 Tue [1]

Dye is only good up to about 2 weeks after it is mixed and it's best if kept in the refrigerator. It will stagnate(sp?) and stink like all get out if you keep it longer than that. It will also cause your fabric to stink if you use it after it has turned that way.

[> [> Re: Help!! I have lost the formula amounts for dyeing!! -- Michelle (Learn Something New Every Day), 20:17:20 08/01/07 Wed [1]

I need to dye some fabric that is 100% polyester for my daughter's halloween costume. Someone from Yahoo Answers referred me here. It is a very pale sea green and I want it to be a deeper shade of aqua. I heard it could be dyed using acrylic craft paints. I have about 5 yards of fabric to be dyed. Please explain in detail how to do this. I have a front loading washer so I can't start the water agitating first. Also, do you let it rinse or spin to get the water and paint out? I can't imagine putting wet paint inside the dryer. If so, do you wash it afterwards to rinse out the hard paint? My fabric is a crinkled satin type of material and I don't want to lose the sheen. Please help!!! Thank you so much!

What is the best paint to use when airbrushing superstretch bodices? I hand paint all of my Venise lace but I need to find a method to cover more area. Here is what I did, I measured around the boot and then I cut my fabric about an inch or tow longer than what I needed. For the width of it, I just doubled it. I did a tiny hem on the bottom of the cuff that would be on the outside of the boot, then I folded the piece in half lengthwise and pressed it so I would have a nice crease. I used velcro to secure it in place. Hope this helps!

Oh that's a tough one, try a concentrated dye along the seams and then redye the entire bodice. It's best if you can dye the fabric before it's sewn together.

I use Apple Barrel colors and add it to the fabric medium by plaid. You can get it at Hobby Lobby. Then I use an airbrush, but a flat even bristle wash brush will work just as well, but it might take you a couple of coats to get it all even. Good Luck.

I have dyed velvet before, and in the Victorian times, dying velvet was fairly commonplace. Just make sure you use a liquid dye rather than a powdered, and add a little vinegar to act as a stay.

Help with dress!! -- Frustrated, 12:02:58 06/13/06 Tue [3]

I am not a seamtress but I know to sew. I have offered to make a pageant dress at no charge for a 6 year old. I am not sure where to begin. I know that you use a circle skirt pattern & fishing line. The dresses I have seen seem a lot fuller than that. Do you sew 2 circles together or is one enough to make the full ruffles? (I plan to make 4 or 5 layers) Should the skirt be about 12 inches? I want the top to be fitted to just below the waist, sleeveless but with a narrow band around the shoulder to decorate. Am I heading in the right direction?

[> Re: shirts -- garner, 13:18:26 10/23/06 Mon [1]

I borrowed a book from the library that tells how. You first iron a crease at the very bottom of your fabric(this is to avoid "pokies"- strands of the fabric that would probably stick out oif you did not iron in the crease) This will ensure that the monofilament thread (fishline) is totally wrapped in fabric. It says to lay the line in the crease and Zig-zag a stitch machine settings width: 0.6-0.8mm) while this crease is still open. Next step::now cut the extra fabric very close to the thread and it should roll over the thread.Sew over the edge with a satin stitch(settings are stich width:0.6-0.8mm and stitch length is:0.5-1.0mm) If fish line is not covered on first pass, go over it again. this is from the book"Designer Techniques" by Kennith D. King. I have not tried this myself. It seems too time consuming. But, maybe you are more patient than I. I don't know how curly the skirt will be- if the effect is the same as a serger. But one website said to use a heavy fishing line like 100 pound line. hope this helps!!! I ordered a serger.

i do now and boy am i glad, lol. Here is how i did it. Get a rolled hem foot for your sewing machine and do a zig zag stitch with your stitch length at .5-1 depending on your machine. Feed the fishline through the curl of the foot as you sew and it works great. It takes A LOT longer. I made shells for a knows designer and she didnt know i did it till I told her, lol. She said unless she looked at it close she couldn't tell. You can use 25-50 lb fishline depending on the brand. Some 50lb will be too big but i have found some brands run smaller. I regularly use 25 and 30 lb.

What I did was used the pattern for my skirt and cut it down at one spot and gathered it to fit the top. Then I used my serger to serge the top of the lace and then I hand tack the overlay to my bodice. If I don't want the overlay I just take it off the bodice. Another thing I have done is made 2 different skirts to match the colors of the bodice and over lay and now I have at least 4 looks in the bodice and skirt.

:~( We need help, please!! -- Roxann, 11:16:22 12/18/05 Sun [1]

I just returned home from deployment to find that my daughter has already outgrown the measurements sent to me by my husband and daughter in order to buy her a new interview suit. Her hips and leg length are a bit arger than anticipated and now I sit here with two beautiful suits and the pants do not fit. Is there anyone out there that can sew and help us out in the next few weeks? If so, please e-mail me at the given e-mail address. Thanks!

Glitzing pageantwear -- Mary, 06:49:23 08/14/05 Sun [1]

Anybody know of how to glitz sportwear or dresses using rhinestones? Are there motifs or patterns with what size stones to use and their application? Some are really embellished to the hilt. Also, what material is used to make those really stiff bows? Crinoline?
Thanks

Sorry I just checked this board out and I always crease it down the center of the strip of fabric and line it up that way. The crease will iron out after you get through embroidering it. Call me anytime if you need help at 731-983-0555.

Brother PE170D Embroidery machine for sale! -- Cora, 18:15:07 02/25/05 Fri [1]

I have a Disney Brother PE170D embroidery machine that I bought this time last year and it has only been used about 4-5 times. I bought it thinking I would use it SOOOO much and that just isn't the case.

I paid $599 for it new in the box from allbrands.com. It comes with the frame. This machine is SOOO easy to use it is amazing. This comes loaded with several fonts, Disney designs, and other generic designs as well. Has a needle threader built in.

Has been taken very good care of and stored when not in use. I just hate to see this one collect dust and not see use. I will send everything I have that came with this.

dye -- &&, 06:05:37 01/25/05 Tue [1]

Apple Barrel Paint Method

You will need:

Item(s) to be dyed
2 old towels you dont mind ruining
4-6 bottles of acrylic paint PER COLOR (Apple Barrel, Delta, FolkArt)
2-3 bottles Textile or Fabric Medium (Walmart, Joann's, etc)
Washing machine or Rubbermaid Tote
Baby wipes
Clorox Cleanup (generic) Cleaner

NOTE: Items that are already sewn together such as swimwears, bodices, etc. tend to have lighter seams and gathers since the dye won't sit in the fabric as long. It is preferred to dye your fabric then cut and assemble the item. The exception is of course chiffon skirts as these tend to dye well. There ARE splotches which are acceptable as the layers of chiffon tend to blend the splotches so they are not noticable. For chiffon, I have found that it is best to mix your paint weaker than normal and redip several times to acheive the correct shade. Too much paint will make your item feel stiff and rubbery.

Washing Machine method:

Large items:

Fill washer about 1 1/2 to 2" full of warm water. Shut off.
Add paints and medium (1 bottle medium to each 2 bottles of paint, 2 oz sizes). Mix well, making sure to break up any clumps. For a large batch of fabric or a skirt, you'll need 4-6 bottles of paint minimum and 2-3 bottles of medium. It's safer to go with the most paint, since you can water it down easily but darkening it up may require adding more paint (if mixture produces too light a shade, you can redip again and again, heat setting in between).

Submerge your fabric or skirt, etc and soak it completely through with the paint mixture. Gently squeeze out the excess liquid and roll loosely in a couple of old towels. Toss in dryer and heat set for five minute intervals on medium heat until heat set and completely dry. If too light, redip and heat set, repeating as often as needed.

Small items:

For things such as Venice lace appliques, Venice lace yardage, trims, etc you can use the same method as above but cut the recipe in half. You can also use a small Rubbermaid tote to mix your paint in. I find it's easier to clean up in the washing machine as you just run a hot water cycle and it washes right out.

CLEANUP:

The dryer will suffer the worst. If you clean it as soon as you are done, use a baby wipe and the generic Dollar General Store Clorox Cleanup Cleaner ($1 a bottle). It comes right off. Gotta love acrylic paint for that! Make sure when you clean it that you have good ventilation as breathing in cleaners is never a good idea.

Your cuticles will probably pick up some of the color. Don't worry it will fade. If it is too bothersome to deal with, get some dishwashing gloves and wear those while you work.

How to dye a shell -- dyer, 05:26:32 01/25/05 Tue [1]

If it is a standard color or something I can mix with Rit dye that is what I use, if not I use Apple Barrel paint.
Take the paint and mix it in about a quart of water until it is all dissoveled, then mix a little more water in until you get the color you want. Remember when it drys it will be a lighter shade. I always test the color on a scrape of fabric to make sure I have the right shade. Then I put the paint-dye into the sink or a 5 gal bucket and dip the shell into it, I let it dry and if it is not the shade I want I dip it again.
On the skirt if the paint is uneven I take a damp cloth and wipe it like a paint brush until it blends in together.
Hope this helps.
