Actually, a lot of these "enlightened" people did say that you must do it this way. I really don't know if in other religions they tampered with what these people but I don't believe that's the case for Christianity. The Gospels were written very soon after the death of Christ. Not even 100 years had past before they were written. This means that there still were people around who could have said that what the Gospels say is inaccurate. In terms of Jesus' miracles, even non-Christians back then never said that He did not do the things the New Testament says He did. They said that it was sorcery or something else but they do not refute the fact that He performed great acts.

Now, that is not to say that religion has not been used to perform terrible acts throughout history but this is because these people have misunderstood the religion and perverted it. It's not because the religion itself is perverted.

chico - I'm sure you've read the bulk of the bible, if not the whole thing. You can't honestly tell me that there isn't some fucked up shit in there - Jehova killing thousands of people, him helping the Israelites kill thousands of people, etc. There's racism in there, there's sexism in there. There's all kinds of shit in there that runs contrary to a healthy, happy society.

And the gospels contradict each other on numerous occasions. They can't ALL be correct - so even 60 years after Christ's death they was already at least some deviation from his teachings.
