Subject: Artists that don't make it?

What happens to talented artist (without debate- shut up!) like Chris Cornell if they don't make it? I mean, what would he be doing now if there was never a Soundgarden or anyone with an open ear to him?

I wondered after watching the Johnny Cash movie and seeing how he kinda just stumbled on his successes - what would he have done if he couldn't have been a musician? Stayed married to Roseanne's Mom? Sold vacuum cleaners?

Chris would have been a cook in a Seafood restaurant and he would be married with 6 kids.

I don't know what would have been of Eddie Vedder if Andy Wood didn't die. What would have been of Mother Love Bone??
The Beatles were turned down by 3 different record companies...

Sometimes I wonder if some people hadn't made it, would they be one of those people who refuse to give up for years and years. I know people who are not far off in age from Cornell who are still waiting for a break. Sometimes I am sad for them, but at the same time I admire that they are sticking to their guns.

My friends ex in his late 30's is with a band who has been signed to several labels had a few albums produced and some selling a bit, but could never seem to break to that next level. Meanwhile back at home his girl stuck with him 6 years. He kept saying that he didn't want to make the next move in his life (get more serious) until the band "made it". Now she's his ex. I think he put all of life on hold waiting for fame to happen.

I know another great guy who is the same. He's been in and out of a pretty good Metal band. When he is not in a band that tours he is the sound tech at Sunset strip clubs.

My POINT --- I wonder if CC would have had that drive that if SG never became what is was would he have put everything else on hold to keep trying no matter what? Or would he just have been happy with some limited success in Seattle and then opted out for that cooks job?

He'd be the choir director at his local Baptist Church.

Can I get an Amen?

You have to wonder, though. There are so many talented artists out there who never get their break, even though they have more talent than 90% of the people on the radio. Seems like luck and image have just as much to do with it as talent.

I also wonder if some of these people would have still been able to make it, through another project.

If Soundgarden never got off the ground, would any of the members still been able to put together another group that could have achieved some level of success?

So I watched the Bob Dylan documentary "No Direction Home" on sunday and they were talking about how when people went to see Bob playing small coffehouses in NYC he had this presence about him that made you listen to him. He had charisma or something about him that said he was a "star". Anyway so he was turned down by this record company who had all the young folk singers, because they said he was a freak. I guess some artists don't make it because record company execs, don't have a clue.
I guess with the bands in Seattle they had already established a scene so that it was easier to be noticed and recognized, so the record companies came to them. They saw the $$$ and went after it.
I read the Jeff Buckley bio and it was really hard for an artist like him to get a company behind him and Columbia had a really hard time marketing him. They didn't know where he fit into the music biz. Which is kinda funny, because you either get Buckley or you don't. I think if he got more exposure than how they represented him as being an indie artist on a big label, more people would have liked him. They held him down in a way.

Write and sing commercial jingles, I guess?
Could you picture Chris selling and singing about Ovaltine or something? (stupid)(shakes head)
