Não sei se estarei sendo um pouco machista ao dizer isso, Fernanda. Mas acho que para as mulheres é mais fácil escrever, já que o fazem desde pequenas, como no seu caso.
Venho tentando incentivar meus alunos a escreverem cartas e, com as meninas sempre deu certo, já com os meninos... Não sei se é uma questão social, mas acredito que as meninas têm menos resistência a escrever cartas, bilhetes, cartões, etc.
O uso do computador, como você disse, realmente motiva mais. Talvez esse seja o caminho (ou um deles) para conseguir que os meninos escrevam mais.
