Alan,

Take heart in what I have to say. I was in your play. I wanted to be in your play. I was honoured to be in your play. I read it and thought that it would be very, very funny. I knew that Charles would be the funniest part I would have played up to now.

I knew that as with all scripts, minor improvements could be made - and I am sure you will make them. But remember - you wanted to make people laugh - and from where I was stood - you did - in heaps.

I'm very sorry to hear about your wife. She would have loved the play and been very proud of your achievement.

You came to see the play on Monday evening. As with all amateur theatre, each night brings with it a different audience. Some evenings a small number of people failed to appreciate your script, our set, our acting, Gilly's direction and Howards underpants. So what!!! For every one person who had a miserable time there where fifty - sixty or a hundred more who enjoyed themselves to one degree or another.

Don't delete your play - you can't - it's out there now. Others will want to put it on.

Keep writing - don't be put off by a few postings on a website forum that is only read by a few people with their own motives for writing what they do (including myself).

I really wish you could have heard some of the comments from my friends and relations who saw the play. Being Yorkshire folk they say it as it is. Apart from the usual comments about my unusual use of the letter 'H', they all loved the play and our performances.

I have even had strangers come up to me and comment on the play and say how much they enjoyed it - telling me about particular scenes they enjoyed the most.

Going back to the negative reviews - ignore them. As long as you ignore the positive ones as well and just get on with writing for an audience and not for the critics - you'll do just fine.

Best wishes

Gerard Kennedy
