What more can I say other than to apologise profoundly for inflicting my script upon you. I am no stranger to criticism, but I didn’t realise how strongly everyone felt.
I must confess I was nervous and apprehensive about coming to see the play, with it not having been professionally performed before and I must admit I did feel like a fish out of water. I had even joked about leaving my car by the stage door with the engine running, so if the play didn’t go down well I could sneak out and be fifty miles down the M6 before the house lights came on. How ironically prophetic that joke was.
What further added to my anxiety was the fact that my poor wife had sadly passed away a few weeks ago and was looking forward to watching the play with me. Mercifully it seems, she has been spared that ordeal. However I decided to attend in her memory.
It was my great pleasure to meet Gilly, all the wonderful cast and some of the other members of BLT. I was indeed very impressed by the professionalism of all of them. I’m only very very sorry that my script did not match up to your professional standard.
Anyway nothing can be done now and I wish you all well for the rest of the season and beyond and I shall of course request that the play be deleted from the catalogue to avoid any further ignominy. Once again my sincere apologies to you all.

Alan Bates
