How far Love can reach is demonstrated here, and to me further justifies Pamela taking such a drastic course as to sleep with Love in order to get rid of him. Working on a fishing boat is dangerous at the best of times, so I think Casey would have brushed any accidents or near-misses off as part of the job. Also, he was so miserable and worried about Pamela, that he probably wasn't as observant as he would normally be.
