From my own experience in life, the farther you can get the man away from "where the party is" the less apt he is to get involved in the partying. For sure. • offering food, no I do not usually do that. I give them the offer of listening if they want to talk about it. I don't eat when I am upset, so I guess that is why I don't just offer up food. • I think the sequoia stands for thriving no matter what- surviving where you are put, finding a way to make it even when far from home and cut off from kin. But at the same time, always standing out and being different. I see it more as a symbol of Pamela than Casey even though she is the water person and he is the earth. • Robin- yes, I felt terribly for him. He had way too much to deal with at way too young an age. He was never allowed to have joy. • 25.1 It is a long-living tree and does grow to tall heights so perhaps longevity, stability and perhaps strength? 25.2 Avoiding temptation didn't occur to me, interesting though. • 26.1 I do it because I want people to feel comfortable and relaxed in my home. Nothing brings people together like food does. It helps people begin conversations and meet each other especially at meetings and functions where some people often feel nervous. I also do it because I like to treat people to something that they normally dont have at home or wouldnt cook for themselves unless it was a special occasion. I like to see people happy! • 27.1 Fiona. We began as pen pals when we were 10 years old and that grew into best friendship. We don't judge ever, we don't apologize, we listen and we care because it what comes naturally to us. • 27.1- I have two- Rhonda and Bobbie (and if either one of you are lurking here step out and say 'hello'). Rhonda and I have known each other since we were eleven almost twelve (our b-days are only three days apart) and Bobbie we met two years later. Rhonda and I don't even have to say anything in most social situations, I know what she's thinking and vice versa. Plus she knows all my secrets, but then I know hers, so it's all good. :) Bobbie went to HS with us for a few years and then we didn't see her for seventeen years. In the meantime we'd all married had children etc. We got back in touch, met up on Cape Cod and it was like no time had passed. • 26-1) Of course - I was raised to appreciate tea and sympathy. Food solves everyone's problems. Okay, maybe that's not true, but hey, it couldn't hurt! It's the ritual of preparing the food and offering it as a gift to someone else that I enjoy so much. (27-1) I've known my oldest friend, Jan, for over 42 years now. We met in 3rd grade. She's lived in various places around the world (her dh was a West Point grad and career military) but we've always stayed in touch. Funny thing, now she lives just a few miles from me but we're both so busy that it's harder for us to connect here in the same city than it was when she lived in Germany almost 30 years ago! • 25.1) As everyone else has already said, the sequoia was survival to me and thriving in a place where maybe it shouldn't. I hope that it symbolizes Casey & Pamela's future. 25.2) It never crossed my mind that he might be moving them out and away to avoid temptation...for escape maybe. • 26.1) I think even if you don't find comfort in the eating (I don't eat when I'm anxious or bothered...though you wouldn't know it to look at me) The simple act of preparing a little something and having something in front of you to pick/nibble at gives people comfort. They don't feel like they have to dive right in and start spilling their guts ya know. • (25-2) I've taken a look at the answers above and I'm not sure anyone mentioned the possibility that this lovely lilttle home was not in Belfast, but more rural, to provide a bit of protection from the cruelties they have seen during the previous stint in Belfast, esp. the riots. (27-2) In reading this chapter I did feel that the father was somehow responsible for Jo's disappearance and potential death. The mother is guilty by association and doing nothing to stop the bullying and beatings her husband gave to the children. Ignoring something does not absolve one of responsibility.
