He's friends with Jamie, understands him to be a totally honourable man, If that were not the case, Pat's comment might mean that he worries that Jamie and Pamela could take things too far. I agree; I don't see it as negative. Its the facts plain and simple and Pat sees that like he sees most things. It isn't easy for Casey. It wouldn't be easy for anyone to have thier spouse involved in such a friendship, one charged with intense sexual attraction and an open declaration of love. That's the truth and Pamela can't deny it. But Pat doesn't blame Pamela just as Casey doesn't. I am musing here but in writing this I started to wonder if this smoldering attraction to Jamie that even Casey can't put out, may be the rub when Casey thinks of Pamela and Love- its as if, Casey isn't enough for her.   - A betrayal with Jamie would be a very different thing- because it would be a betrayal of the heart, not merely of the body. I think Casey knows that neither Jamie nor Pamela would do that- it would mean too much. Jamie doesn't want a woman who is tied to another man. Casey has had to accept Jamie as part of Pamela's life as a simple matter of the fact that more than his love, she needs Jamie's friendship. He also trusts Jamie implicitly with Pamela, something that irks him, but that he also counts upon when he cannot be there. Things change a great deal in this third novel- the shift in balance between the three etc. Casey is very much a MAN now, boyhood is gone completely from him and he moves to a different place in his life, if that's not too cryptic.   - I know what you mean Denise, but there are some basic similarities, older, attractive, rich, powerful, involved in politics and Jamie can be quite ruthless when need be. In many ways Casey is still finding his way in the world and as some have said he seemed sullen in Boston.
