Subject: 61.3) As individuals, we can be the most human - and humane - in times of crisis. Instinct blurs or obliterates rational thought. Patrick cannot avoid responding anymore than he can change his eye color. I'm not sure that sanity should override passion. (Crises can also bring out the beast in otherwise gentle people, as seen in the gunmen.) (61.4) Oh yes, I love to listen to political debates in other countries. That's why BBC.com is my homepage. Their dialogue would cause outrage here. What serves as normal in Europe is often far too left for mainstream US consideration. The international press did a magnificent job of helping to bring the Vietnam war to an end, but it failed in Northern Ireland. I think the international press were literally afraid to set foot in NI for fear of retaliation.

  • 62.1) Retaliation is simply not in their nature. These men are not capable of mindless destruction. After an upsetting episode, I also tend to clean or do heavy physical work just to make myself exhausted. Otherwise, I'd be just a ball of nervous energy. (62.2) Always quiet, never scream, a born introspective. But may slam a door or two. (62.3) I think what we're seeing played out here was the result of sheer panic, nothing more, nothing less.
