Subject: Mermaid in a Bowl of Tears ~Chapter 61 – Butcher’s Dozen

1. “Derry, which despite a population comprised largely of working class Catholics, hadn’t seen a Nationalist mayor in fifty years.” Did the lack of Democracy surprise you? How do you think that occurred during those years? Do you think they are truly past this type of corruption now?
2. Bernadette Devlin – After having read these books, I did some research on the web and found videos of her speech. Do you think that because she was female she was spared some of the brutality that the men faced? What else do we know about this talented woman?
3. Whatever possessed Pat to crawl out toward that dying man? Does his passion sometimes get the best of his sanity?
4. “Did the British establishment really hate the Irish so much that it would issue a shoot to kill order on a bunch of unarmed civilians?” Clearly the press was somewhat at fault here or just missing entirely. When I have travelled outside of the US, I’ve read articles that look at our politics from an angle that would not be printed in our papers. I found it very eye-opening. Has anyone else experienced this?
Chapter 62 – No Place for Love or Dream at all…
1. I found it interesting that Father Jim and Pat chose to help with postmortem examinations rather than “kill someone”. I would have imagined it would have fed their outrage. Have you ever found yourself doing something completely inappropriate following a huge upset? (And I don’t mean getting blasted. I came home from my mother’s funeral and washed every window in the house. ;-) How do you release when you need to?
2. And, like the Riordans, do you get quiet or scream and yell?
3. I debated the point that the Brits had done this just to place their people in the tight structure of the IRA. I thought they either got fed up or panicked. What did you all think?
4. Yeats – “No place for love or dream at all, For God goes by with white footfall.” Can some of you true literary talents tie this verse to this chapter?
