• Nuala's story is so very sad, to lose your whole family to the sea is unimaginable. The sea called them all and took them away. The sea has a strange, clutching hold on many people, and it's a frightening beast capable of such loss and devastation. To spend your life waiting for some physical representation of your husband or son to wash ashore makes me want to cry! • 59.1) I experience pressure in my sinus when a good storm is coming in or the air pressure is about to change, it's like a dull headache that doesn't go away until nature has done what it needs to do. • 59.2) I’m not sure what the significance of Nuala’s story might be to Casey & Pamela, but it was indeed a sad story and has stayed with me as well. I wonder if Nuala could move on to a more peaceful place if her husband and son’s bones were returned to her. Is this what she waits for maybe? Closure? The idea of ‘waiting’ is romantic but sad in a way too, if you’re not able to go on and live the rest of your life…constantly searching for a loved one that’s not coming back. I like to think of the ‘waiting’ scenario as maybe a special place where you can go and remember, talk with your loved one, tell them what’s going on in your life and reaffirm your feelings for them have not died with them. That would be healthy to me. I hate to even think or talk about – ‘if I go before you’, ‘if you go before me’ stuff and I have no idea how I’d handle it, but I would hope for peace and strength to carry on with whatever is left for me to do here in this world. • 59.1) Always get a roaring headache before a storm front moves through. Also have premonitions about events. Hate them because too often they are true. (59.2) Maybe the significance of Nuala's story is to underscore what Pamela and Casey have always known (but may need reminding of), that all you know of each other is this moment, right now. If your thoughts focus on tomorrow you may find yourself longing for, and living in, the past. As for the waiting, yes, without question. I've already spent years waiting to be reunited with some loved ones who were taken too soon. Nuala and I have a few things in common, including the need to ease pain once in awhile. • 60.1) I like the references to lichen and moss. They're such simple organisms that sort of represent life's continuity despite less-than-ideal conditions. That kind of describes Nuala, and could also represent Northern Ireland. Have I gone off the deep end here or what?! I like the simplicity of the chapter. It seems to be in response to the previous chapter: Time may indeed stand still for Nuala, but it continues to move forward without pity or mercy for Pamela and Casey, and Northern Ireland. • Chap. 59 Q1) Not in the way of tasting an emotion or the weather. Like Mahri, my sinuses tell me when the weather is changing -- either warming up or cooling down, especially if rain is coming. There have been times when I've "felt" someone else in the room when nobody's there. 2) In many ways, Nuala's story is a warning to enjoy your loved ones while you have them, they can be snatched away all too soon. It's also a testament to the staying power of love, but shows how it can turn to obsession through inconsolable grief. Would I wait? I don't know. It would depend on a whole variety of circumstances, including my age and whether I had other children. Q3) Not too fussed on whisker burn myself. • Chapt 60 Q1) A vivid description that's not overblown or too much yet covers all of the senses really helps to draw me into the story and the lives of the characters. When I can close my eyes and "see" the setting, I know the author has done an outstanding job.
