Nixon did do some good as president, but most people view Nixon as a bad president because he abused his power. Nixon had men wiretap the democrat’s headquarters to spy on them, thereby using underhanded methods to try to alter the outcome of the election of 1972 (and it was about the election, the five men who broke into the Watergate hotel all had ties to the Committee to Re-Elect the President A.K.A. CREEP). Interfering in the democratic process of this country is a crime, which I believe, should be comparable to treason. Now apart from the actual bugging of democratic process, there was the cover-up precipitated and carried out by top Whitehouse officials including the president. There were the attempts to destroy evidence immediately after the incident by Whitehouse aids and the head of the F.B.I. and attempts to head off an investigation by the F.B.I. After the facts of the scandal began to manifest to the public and congress began investigating the administration committed more crimes and suspect actions to try to save it-self from political destruction. Examples include paying bribes to some of those involved to keep quiet; on April 30th 1973 Nixon fired 4 subordinates in the Whitehouse, withholding taped conversations from the congressional investigation (meaning obstruction of justice) by claming “executive privilege”. The “Saturday Night Massacre” in which the Attorney General was forced to resigned, and the deputy attorney general, and a special prosecutor Archibald Cox were fired by Nixon, because they were after attempting to get hold of some taped conversations by the president. Nixon was finally forced to give up the tapes by an order from the Supreme Court, a few weeks later Nixon resigned bringing an end to one of the most disgusting scandals involving abuses of presidential power in U.S. history. So that is why Nixon was a bad president he abused his position for personal gain, crimes which he never paid for.
