Well, something was going on. Although the boy very likely did have his appendix removed, another possibility and it's just that, is that it could have possibly have been a placebo surgery. This would be a procedure designed to simulate the actual surgery complete with anesthesia and probably superficial incision, but no procedure beyond that. Why would anyone do that? I don't know. Could be some sort of study to determine the long term effects of placebo surgeries. The kid is in the prime age group for getting appendicitis, ages 10-30. So, for example, it could be to answer the question, are kids who think their appendix has already been removed less likely to get appendicitis? I don't know that this is the case, and have only the info presented in the original post. But I believe it is a possibility, however remote. Placebo surgery is a real thing, though its ethics are very questionable:
