Found this article that seems to lend credence to your stories about considerable concern for kids' urinary tracts and bowels:

Emotional and behavioral problems in children and adolescents with lower urinary tract dysfunction: a population-based study

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31471270/

Article is behind a paywall, but abstract available free.

It's written in dense "medicalese" but the conclusion is clear enough:

"Conclusions: Children and adolescents with LUTD (Lower Urinary Tract Dysfunction) have more emotional and behavioral problems, with bladder and bowel dysfunction being an aggravating factor for this association."
