In reply to: Knut Holt 's message, "Girl, 13yo, therapy in nude by psychiatrist to cure shyness" on 10:02:17 01/09/22 Sun

I agree with Knut Holt's conclusions that the Therapist could have exploited the therapy sessions. I'm not sure there's any conclusive evidence she did, but she certainly could have. I also agree that the woman in the waiting room was a shill for the therapist. I think it is noteworthy that the person in the waiting room was a woman, and not male. The gender of the person who brought the girl's clothes during the final session is not given, though my guess is that it was a female also. Not sure about the pictures, but certainly possible.

An additional observation: The therapist kept the girl in her office, or the waiting room, which were areas she controlled completely, and thus could insure the girl's safety. Also, apparently no males were introduced into the picture. Having to encounter a male might have made the girl excessively uncomfortable, and could have been traumatic. So apparently there was some considerable concern by the therapist for the girl's well-being.

Finally, the most important question is not really answered: Did the therapy actually help the girl? The girl doesn't say, however she was obviously uncomfortable on the final session she described, which leaves me somewhat uneasy. This alone is not an indication that the therapy did not work, for people can often benefit from doing things that initially make them feel uncomfortable. However, my impression is that she was very glad to get her clothes on, and get out of there.

My own impression based on my experience with several therapists is that therapy is often of very limited value, sometimes utterly useless, and occasionally worse than useless because it makes the client worse. My impression is that some therapists have a repertoire of set pieces or courses of treatment that they follow with all their clients, but I can't say this for sure. Some therapists I have encountered are honest and trying to help, and respond to the client as an individual. But I questioned what one was doing, to the point of growing to distrust her, and dropping out of therapy altogether with her. Even when you get a good therapist, there is always the suspicion at least in my mind that the therapist is not telling you everything, and to one degree or another, not being totally honest with you. Based on my experience and what I have read, I think many if not most therapists make audio recordings of their therapy sessions and do not tell their clients, but I can't say this for sure. Video recordings? Well it's a lot easier to record video than it used to be, and certainly a lot easier to hide cameras.

Go figure.
