First of all, does anyone even check this board anymore?

Probably not since there are no longer is a team known as the Cook County Cheetahs.

What kind of name is the Thunderbolts? I don't mind the Midway part of the name as much, but just what the heck is a Thunderbolt? I've heard of Lightning bolts, but I've never seen a Thunderbolt...mainly because I, like most others, CANNOT SEE SOUND! THUNDER IS NOT VISABLE! IT IS A SOUND!

What a stupid name for a team...plus nothing like changing the name and confusing all of the Cheetahs fans who have no been following this ownership change. When they come looking to go to a Cheetahs game next season they will not find one, and will probably not return to Crestwood for a game.

Good luck boys...I think you are going to need it.

And I heard the owners are thinking of putting a retractable roof on Hawkinson Ford Field.

I speak for the dedicated Cheetah fans waiting for this new ownership. Lets not just blame poor marketing. In my opinion even low budget creative skills and strategic placement will gain us popularity. These new owners are movers and shakers. Positive decisions, energy and excitement rekindles our game spirit......Go Cook County!!!!!

Today's Southtown has an item on the new offices, for which groundbreaking occurred this past week. A souvenir shop is to be included.
Most interesting in the piece was a mention of looking for a "high profile GM". Previous reports intimated that Kevin Rhomberg would be the guy, maybe even on the field, but apparently not. The article even mentioned Pete Rose, althougb I am not sure that came from inside the organization.

Cheetahs new lease could last until 2018

New owners building front office, paying higher rent

Wednesday, October 15, 2003

By Steve Schmadeke
Staff writer

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Crestwood has given the new owners of the Cook County Cheetahs minor league baseball team a lease with options that could keep them in the village's stadium until 2018.
In return, the owners agreed to put up $100,000 for a new multipurpose front office building and will pay a higher minimum rent than the previous owners, who were given a five-year lease.

"It's a positive thing," team president Kevin Rhomberg said. "We're not going anywhere. Fans know they'll have a professionally managed baseball team. The city knows they have a tenant."

Officials expect groundbreaking on the building, which will combine a front office with ticket sales and space for Cheetahs souvenirs, to begin in the next few weeks. The village has pledged to cover any extra costs above $100,000, according to the agreement.

The Cheetahs' contract runs for five years with two five-year extensions, provided the team "conducted its baseball operations in a high quality and professional manner."

At least six months before the end of each five-year term, team owners must notify the village in writing that they want to extend the contract. The village ultimately decides whether to approve the extension.

Minimum rent is $60,000 next season and $80,000 the next four years. The team will pay no less than $90,000 a year during the first extended term and no less than $100,000 a year during the second.

Crestwood receives all income from parking, $1 per paid admission and 20 percent of revenue from scoreboard advertising.

Under the previous contract, team owners paid a $50,000 minimum rent each year. Parking, admission and scoreboard revenue were split the same way they are under the new contract.

Mayor Chester Stranczek said the village was willing to give the team a longer lease because the new owners agreed to upgrade the stadium. But he said if the team's attendance figures continue to lag, the village may not grant any contract extensions.

"If things don't improve, they're not going to be welcome here either," he said. "But I don't think that's going to happen. We've got seven good businessmen who are putting their money where their mouth is."

The team was purchased last month from a group headed by Blistex chairman and chief executive David Arch. The new owners include local businessmen, a prominent former politician and Stranczek's son.

Everyone is badmouthing the previous owners and setting their hopes high for the new owners, and honestly, your comments are fair to anyone.

Advertising costs in the Chicago-area are outrageous. It costs a ton to advertise in this market, which is probably why the old owners didn't do it as much, and why the new owners won't either.

Yes attendance has been on the decline, but if you have ever been to Hawkinson Ford Field, you would know why. The baseball game on the field is always good (sometimes even great), but the stadium is in need of updating. It is small, full of bad sightlines and just plain ugly in many regards.

Everyone seems to think new owners will do the trick, but if you have been around sports long enough, you know that it just isn't the case.

With that said, best of luck to the new group. You're going to need it.

(Also, does anyone else find it interesting that the mayor's son is in on the team? Maybe the new team name can be the Cook County Conflicts of Interests).

From today's Southtown.....sounds like sweeping changes for the good.
If only the Arch's had supported Chuck Heeman with this much enthusiasm, or money.

Owners: Cheetahs will be remade

Thursday, October 2, 2003

By Steve Schmadeke
Staff writer

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The new owners of the Cook County Cheetahs pledged Wednesday to make sweeping improvements to the embattled minor league team.
Among the changes will likely be a new team name, a decision that should be announced by the end of the month, officials said.

And groundbreaking is scheduled to begin soon on a new front-office building for the team. The new owners also said they will hire year-round staff members and would work on making fans happier, improving the quality of food served at games and making sure the restrooms are clean.

Seven local businessmen, including former state Sen. Patrick O'Malley and the son of Crestwood Mayor Chester Stranczek, purchased the team from Blistex CEO David Arch for around $700,000. The Cheetahs had been up for sale for three years.

Arch had been criticized by Stranczek, who led the push to build Crestwood's $7.8 million baseball stadium, since the end of the Cheetahs' first season. The mayor said Arch failed to invest enough time and money in the team, a judgment that lingered even after this week's sale.

"On a personal note, I've been for a couple years very unhappy with how things were going with our team," the mayor said Wednesday night. "We didn't spend $7.8 million to have this run as hobby. We want this to run as a business, and these people who have taken over are going to do it."

Arch did not return a voice mail message Wednesday.

The village has signed a new five-year lease with the team, and the Frontier League accepted the sale during a conference call with owners on Friday.

The new owners have hired Kevin Rhomberg, a baseball management consultant, to manage the team's day-to-day operations.

Rhomberg said that he understood the pressure he was under to turn around a team that has slipped in attendance from the top third to the bottom third of the Frontier League. He was confident that the team could be successful.

"There's going to be hiccups, no doubt about it," he said. "But we're going to enhance everything."

Mayor Stranczek said that he expected immediate results from the new owners, but others said improvements in attendance and the team's level of play may take awhile.

"You won't see miracles overnight," said league commissioner Bill Lee. "This will take some time."

Lee said the team should be able to average more than 2,000 fans. The Cheetahs went from having 86,000 fans in its first Crestwood season four years ago to drawing only 60,000 last season.

It remains to be seen what the mayor, who threatened to kick the Arch-owned Cheetahs out of the stadium if they weren't sold, will do if attendance at the stadium continues to lag.

But Stranczek said the village does not receive much money from the team, only a head tax and portions of the parking revenue and scoreboard advertisements, and may only be looking for a stronger commitment from the team's owners.

Bob Stump, one of the seven investors in the partnership, a limited liability group called Crestwood Professional Baseball, said he viewed his commitment as less of a business opportunity and more as a way to improve the area's quality of life.

"I'm a baseball fan," he said. "It's not a real profitable investment as far as business returns go. This is more of a way to support the community."

After hearing about the impending sale of the Cheetahs over the Labor Day weekend, one of my first thoughts was will the new owners do a better job of advertising the team. After six long years in it's community, I still find baseball fans who don't know, or haven't heard of the Cheetahs. The Crestwood location is a true gold mine and need to be advertised to re-build it's fan base. Next they need to run it like a true professional club and year after year place a winning product on the field. The past six years are behind us, but it's not too late to turn things around and see this grow into the true vision that the Mayor had in mind.

Cheetahs Staff Moves On

CRESTWOOD, IL - The Cook County Cheetahs announced today that their entire remaining staff - General Manager Chuck Heeman, Director of Administration Pat Rusthoven and Director of Stadium Operations Michael Conrad - will not be returning for the 2004 season.

"With the impending changes in ownership and a new direction with the club, Pat and I have been told that our services won't be needed with the new organization," Heeman said. "The new owners had given us the opportunity to re-interview at some point in the future, but we've declined that opportunity. Michael (Conrad) had already informed us that he'll be moving out of the area by the end of the month."

Heeman joined the Cheetahs in December 2001, and Rusthoven has spent five years with the team. Conrad took over Hawkinson Ford stadium operations last spring.

"It's been an interesting two years for me, and I do thank David Arch (Cheetahs owner) for giving me the opportunity to work in baseball," Heeman said. "It's certainly any new ownership group's perogative to bring in new people, and we all wish them luck in accomplishing great things with the team. Working with the staff we were able to put together this season has been a pleasure, and I'll take good memories from that part of my Cheetahs experience."

The three staff members' last day of work will be September 30.

Stranczek family part of new Cheetahs bid

Saturday, September 20, 2003

By Kristen McQueary
Staff writer

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The son of Crestwood Mayor Chester Stranczek is among the investors putting up money to buy the Cook County Cheetahs minor league baseball team, which under new ownership will be run by a former Cleveland Indians player.
Michael Stranczek, who works at the Stranczek family's trucking company, is one of several investors contributing more than $200,000 each to buy the team from its current owner, the Daily Southtown confirmed Friday.

Primary investors include John Kelly of Oak Forest, a lobbyist who works for Crestwood on legislative issues in Springfield, and former state Sen. Patrick O'Malley of Palos Park.

Kevin Rhomberg, a former Indians player, will be general manager of the team and part-owner. He previously served as managing partner for the minor league Canton Crocodiles.

Rhomberg played for the Indians in 1982, 1983 and 1984. His resume includes work as a major league scout and intercollegiate head baseball coach. He is married with four children.

Chester Stranczek has been looking for new team owners for more than a year as attendance at Hawkinson Ford Field declined. Stranczek believes current owner Dave Arch, CEO of Blistex, wasn't marketing the team well enough to draw large crowds.

Crestwood owns the 2,500-seat ballpark and receives a portion of attendance, score board and parking fees from the team.

Stranczek reportedly wanted to see local investors who hold a stake in the community and people close to him own the team.

Rhomberg and his family will move from their Ohio home to the Chicago area to launch the new venture.

Other investors have not yet been named.

According to a preliminary copy of the investors' agreement, they will recoup their investments in total before money flows to the team manager.

Arch wants $600,000 to $700,000 for the team. With startup costs, the investors are putting up about $1 million. The deal is expected to be final by the end of the month, sources said.

The mayor also has a son, Robert, who serves as a trustee for Crestwood. Neither he, the mayor, nor Michael Stranczek returned calls for comment.

Sunday's Star quoted owner David Arch as saying that the Cheetahs had not been sold, but that negotiations were ongoing with a "very interested" buyer. Attendance fell 10% this year (66,000 to 60,000, although there were two additional home dates in 2002), and GM Chuck commented that the limited budget had something to do with not getting people into the park for the first time. (His quotes were right on, he noted that once you get someone to a game, and they see first hand the ease of travel, low cost of concessions and family atmosphere, they usually come back.)
Let's hope this team goes to a truly involved and engaged owner. The interest generated from local businesses was obvious, considering the greater number of high end giveaways that were offered (like vacations and the cars). The mayor is ready and willing to work with them, that's for sure.
Let's also hope that the concessionaires (Buona?) share that renewed interest in product, both quality and supplies.
I think the GM did a slam bang job all things considered and I know that my family will be back for games in 2004.

So, now that we're again in need of a manager, who are the likely candidates? Will we stay in-house and give a Carlos May a shot? I think he's earned it. Or does Greg Beck deserve it? I'd like to see them go with a guy that has some name recognition in the area, someone that might bring some fans out to the park and be a good baseball guy. Would someone like a Greg Hibbard be considered? Last I heard, he was coaching in the Northern League.

Expansion, team movement on the horizon for Frontier League

BY CHRIS DUGAN

THE OBSERVER-REPORTER

dugan@observer-reporter.com

Independent baseball leagues usually have three seasons - the regular season, the postseason and the moving season.

The Frontier League knows all too well about moving season. In each of the past two years, there have been three franchise relocations in the 12-team league. And there could at least one more in the coming months.

With Kenosha averaging a mere 609 fans per game, there is plenty of speculation the team's stay in Wisconsin will be a short one. The Mammoths played four seasons in Huntingburg, Ind., as the Dubois County Dragons, before moving to Kenosha this year, hoping that the larger market would provide financial stability.

Only the Florence Freedom, who are playing their home games in Hamilton, Ohio, while waiting for a new stadium to be built in northern Kentucky, is doing worse at the turnstiles than Kenosha. Florence is averaging 455 fans per home game. Frontier League commissioner Bill Lee, however, isn't concerned about the Freedom's future.

"Florence is playing in a different state, 50 miles from where they are going to be playing and in a temporary facility," Lee said during a recent trip to Washington. "Are they going to draw in Hamilton? No. So I'm not worried about that one, but obviously we have to do something about the Kenosha franchise. We have to solidify that one. Everything else is in good shape."

From the time the moving vans left Huntingburg, it was rumored Kenosha would be only a temporary home for the Frontier League. That seems even more likely now. But where will the franchise relocate?

One possibility is, of all places, Hamilton. Part of the deal in allowing Florence to play in Hamilton was that the Ohio city could get expansion franchise or relocated team when one becomes available. A Hamilton group has already applied for a franchise.

Another possible spot for a franchise is Lee's Summit, Mo. League officials visited the Kansas City suburb this week and word is that a team could be operating there, possibly as soon as next year.

Lee believes the Frontier League is on track to expand, perhaps as soon as 2005.

"The immediate goal is to get 12 teams solid. The intermediate goal for the league is to get to 16 teams," said Lee. "The Frontier League has, because of its geographics, the potential to be the largest of all the independent leagues."

An expansion to 16 teams would almost certainly include a franchise within a short driving distance of Washington, now the league's eastern-most location. The Wild Things lost their two closest rivals - Johnstown and Canton, Ohio - last offseason. The shortest road trip for the Wild Things this year is to Chillicothe, Ohio, more than three hours away.

Lee spent a weekend earlier this month in Washington, and he was doing more than watching games at Falconi Field. The commissioner visited several locations for an expansion team, including Butler, where a group wants to place on a team and renovate historic Pullman Park.

Another Western Pennsylvania location could be the Greensburg/Murraysville corridor. A potential ownership group from Greensburg was in Washington last week and attended a Wild Things game.

Morgantown, W.Va., has also been mentioned as a potential site.

"It's not just Butler. There are three or four good markets within this area, within a commuting distance from Washington, which would be a tremendous asset to the Wild Things and the league," Lee said.

"There is a lot of potential in the area west of Cleveland and the Detroit area. But we've got to get somebody who will partner up with the Wild Things. And that will happen."

At a time when two independent leagues folded this year - the Arizona-Mexican and the Canadian - Lee said the Frontier is at an all-time high in terms of interest from potential markets and ownership groups. Just how many of those can get past the talking and planning stages will determine how soon the league expands.

"In one of the league meetings, an owner was jotting down all the places that I've been to or will visit in the very near future," Lee said. "There was something like 22 potential markets from Kansas City to the Pittsburgh area. We've had inquiries from the upper peninsula of Michigan, as far west as Kansas City and as far south as Alabama, Tennessee and Kentucky. I would say that a 400-mile radius of Indianapolis is what we're talking about. It's been amazing the amount of interest we've had."

There was even a group from Colorado that, according to Lee, was willing to pay the travel expenses of visiting teams if the league would place a franchise there.

One area that is making a strong push for a Frontier team is Traverse City, a resort town in northwest Michigan. Leo Trich, the league's director of development, Wild Things owner John Swiatek and Lee visited Traverse City three weeks ago and each told the Observer-Reporter they were impressed by the market and its potential.

John Wuerfel, a former hotel owner in Traverse City, along with his wife and oldest son, want to build a 4,000-seat, $6-million ballpark. What makes the project even more attractive is the Wuerfels are not asking for financial support. They plan to finance the ballpark on their own. The Wuerfels have even announced they will name a team, if they are granted a franchise, the Traverse City Cherry Bears.

The earliest Traverse City could join the league is 2005.

"One nice thing about the way our league has grown," Lee said, "is we don't need to have goals. We can grow the league as big as we want, and at our pace."

After seeing the last 5 or 6 box scores and looking back in the season, I would bet any amount of money that the Cheetahs have comitted the most fielding errors in the FL. I mean come on. It's getting rediculous seeing 2's and 3's in the E column every night.

Question about the playoff structure: do the top 2 teams in each division make the post season? Or the top team in each division? Or is there sort of a "wild card" setup? The "other" division is feasting on the bottom 2 teams and have great records.
Also, are the series best of 3, best of 5 or best of 7?
Thanks!

This may seem a little late but the Cheetahs need a closer. They have 2 very good relief pitchers in Eric White and Mike Ott. The rest of the bullpen has been shaky at best this year. Why have there been no moves. These 2 are setups guys and do a great job but we need a closer. Too many 1 run losses also.

X's Balet Sold to Mariners
Sioux City Explorers Press Release

The Sioux City Explorers announced today that the Seattle Mariners have purchased Pichi Balet's contract and he will join the Mariners class A affiliate in San Bernardino, CA on Friday.

Balet, 25, started the 2003 season with the Explorers after the X's acquired his rights from the Joliet Jackhammers in the trade that involved Pete Rose Jr. for five players. In his 54 games with the X's, Pichi leads the league in hitting with a .359 batting average and has 31 RBI's and 4 home runs. Balet also played in last night's Northern League All-Star game and picked up the only two RBI's for the West Division with a two-run homer in the fourth inning as the West team lost 4-2 to the East.

The 6'0, 210 pound Balet, played the 2001 and 2002 seasons in the Frontier League with Dubois City, and Cook County. In 2002 with Cook County, he led the league with a .405 batting average in 78 games and managed to knock in 64 runs. He also wound up 5th in total bases and slugging percentage, 3rd in on base pct, 2nd in hits, and 1st in strikeouts per plate appearances.

I went to Friday Night's game vs. Gateway. What a pitching performance by both pitchers. The CHEETAHS All-Star Brett Stephens pitched a complete game, struck out 11, walked NONE and still lost a 1 run game. I believe the CHEETAHS lead the league in one run losses, with 13, and if they had half of those 1 run losses turned into wins they'd be in first place, in the Western Division. We have to start winning these close games guys or the playoffs may be out of reach. LET'S GO CHEETAHS!!!

From an article on ESPN.com

http://espn.go.com/mlb/allstar03/s/2003/0715/1580955.html

"Brendan Donnelly refers to the independent Frontier League as a 'pretty bad league.'"

That's a fine way to talk about a league that gave you a shot. Is the FL the majors or AAA? No. But the guys on that field in Crestwood and the ones in Chillicothe and Kenosha and all over the FL are good, solid baseball players, some of whom like Mr. Donnelly might just someday win an MLB All Star game. Shame on him for talking bad about the place he got his start. I only hope that when James Clelland wins an MLB All Star Game and Pichi Balet drives in the winning run, that they remember where they got their first shot. Or at the very least, keep their mouth shut.

Is there a problem with the fact that Cook County is only averaging 991 people and everyone else is well above 2,000?? Seems to me there might be a problem, what is the front office doing about this. This is actually embarrassing. Kane County had 500,000 people last year and they are the same distance from Chicago as Crestwood is. Something needs to be done, its a disgrace.

First of all, I would like to say congrats to James Clelland for his callup. He deserves it. In retrospect, I am questioning recent moves made in the Cheetah pitching rotation. Why was Kris Regas removed from the rotation when he seemed to be a solid starter who has been let down by a shoddy bullpen? With Clelland now gone, I would think that the team would want some reliable starters to pick up the slack. To be honest some of the recent pitcher signings (from last year until now) that were supposed to help the team , haven't proven to be worth a whole lot.

Why was tonights game cancelled does anyone know?

My wife called the stadium around 5PM with some questions regarding tickets, and just got the general recording that if you know your parties extention, dial it now. In the past if a game was cancelled the recorded message would state such folks wouldn't make the trip to the park, only to find out there is no game.

So my wife, kids and their friends all piled into the car all ready for a ballgame, and we get to the park to find out there is no game.

Why wasn't the phone message changed, or why wasn't someone there to answer the phones and let people know the game was cancelled? Needless to say my family and I are very disappointed.

If anyone from the cheetahs reads this, I hope the next time this happens you will be considerate and let the folks who call the stadium know the game has been cancelled before they make an hours drive to find out.

In case anyone is wondering, tonights game vs Mid-Missouri, that was rained out, will be made up as part of a double header Saturday Night starting at 5 PM. I went to the Hawk expecting to see Friday Night's game and was told this info.
Remember in the Frontier League doubleheaders are played as two seven inning games. Let's hope the CHEETAHS CAN PROVIDE PRE-FIREWORKS SHOW FIREWORKS, AND WIN BOTH GAMES!

I was at 2 of the 3 home games this past weekend and wondered what everyone thought? I did not see the Opening Night Game but James Clelland's performance was impressive by numbers. The offense seems to be struggling right now and I was shocked by the defensive blunders. Yesterday's game there were 2 errors and also they missed a for sure double play and a stolen base (bad throw from the catcher) in the 6th which cost them one run. I was impressed with the aggressiveness on the bases and the offense will come. The starter, Williams, yesterday struggled and on Saturday Campos did an alright job followed by a strong performance by Palmer. Yesterday, Ott and Quiros did a fantastic job but was shocked by Grinnell and Wells. The 2 righties of Ott and Quiros look promising for the season as does the lefty White but not sure about others. The outfield's speed is amazing, just need to put up runs. I am impressed with all that is going on in games as well! Looks to be great for the year, just keep things going!

The Cheetahs defeated the International Baseball Academy today by a score of 9-1. Centerfielder Nick Gontmaher went 4 for 6 including a first inning leadoff home run and two stolen bases. Starting and winning pitcher James Clelland struck out 7 in 5 innings, with relief help from Luis Reyes, Kris Regas and Joe Catomer to finish the game.

The team looked very aggressive on the bases.. hopefully the start of things to come!

CHEETAHS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST ROCKFORD

Crestwood, IL- The Cheetahs won game one of a double header, 4-3, with in the bottom of the seventh. Warren Gaspar walked with one out. Nick Gontmaher then grounded into a fielders choice. Gaspar stole second and scored on two errors by the RiverHawks. The key hit for the Cheetahs in game one was by Mark Walker with one out in the sixth tying the game at 3. Walker tripled to left-center scoring Josh Thomas and Warren Gaspar. The winning pitcher for the Cheetahs was Dan Wells. The losing pitcher for the RiverHawks was Bobby Mack.

In the nightcap, the Cheetahs lost by a final of 6-3. Losing Pitcher for the Cheetahs was Jaime Quiros, who surrendered four runs on five hits in two innings of work. The Cheetahs took a short lived lead in the 3rd inning on a double by Jeremiah Bergheger scoring Adam OReel and Chuck Van Robays.

Tonight I was able to see some good things and some bad things, being able to weed out the bad. Some guys were able to get some at bats that havent had many, so we were able to get a good look at what some of our guys can do against live pitching. Overall the performance was good and I was happy with what I saw this evening. Said Cheetahs Manager Mike Moore.

The Cheetahs open their season on Friday May 23rd, 2003 against the same Rockford RiverHawks at 7:05 p.m. For ticket information call 708-489-2255.

Are the Cheetahs really going to pick up anyone at these tryouts?? Look at the roster its packed with great players. The pitchers, looking at all stats from last year and college, look solid, the starters listed on the Cheetahs homepage look to be an excellent choice and bullpen looks to be solid with the return of Williams and pickup of Sokoll. Infield is solidified and catcher situation looks great and outfield the speed and ability out there is wonderful. Come on, lets set this roster and get rolling!

Here is some information for all of you who are fans of Dan Firlit and want to know what he has been up to since moving up in the baseball ranks. After playing for the El Paso Diablos for awhile, Dan was moved to the South Bend Silver Hawks in South Bend, Indiana. The team is still affiliated with the Diamond Backs, and they picked up Dan because they needed stronger infielders. Hopefully Dan can continue to succeed in Indiana! And, hey, now his local fans don't have to travel so far to cheer him on!

I was sorry to see that the July 1 game is sold out, since I'm not one of the people that have tickets. I love going to weekday Cheetah games - take a half day off work, go pick up the daughter and go to the game. Why don't the Cheetahs do more of them? There are only 2 this year and one is sold out, the only sellout thus far. It seems that people will go to the games on a weekday (or is it all groups?), why not make it 4 or 5 instead of 2?

I've attended numerous CHEETAH games at "The Hawk" since it's opening, and am anxiously looking forward to the 2003 season. I proudly wear my Chico Walker (still the best manager this franchise ever had!) to each game.

In past seasons the CHEETAHS have played an exhibition game or two with admission free at "The Hawk". Will this occur prior to the 2003 season?

It appears the CHEETAHS are re-tooling the team with new players and leadership (as far as on field personnel goes) for the upcoming season. Even some of last years regulars are returning, which makes for a nice blend of old and new talent.

While I'll miss some of the "old timers" like Rinne, Balet and Schmitz, I believe change is good and important. I, for one, am glad to see this approach taken by the CHEETAH management.

Because of this and the added scheduled activities at "The Hawk" this coming season, I'm considering a 10 game season ticket package. It should be an exciting season in 2003!

WARNING TO ALL CHEETAH FANS: THIS TEAM IS GOING TO COMPETE THIS YEAR. GET YOUR TICKETS NOW!!! DuBois County, Who? Rockford Who?? COOK COUNTY CHEETAHS, THAT'S WHO!!!

I see in today's Trib that the Cheetahs have cut loose several players, including Julio Chinea, Adam Palmer and Rob Conway: three guys who I thought would be contributors to the 2003 team. Chinea in fact was reacquired via trade late last season. Did these guys request their release? Were they released because better players are here, or on the horizon? Maybe to free the team from some detailed contractual obligation?

Anyone have any insight on this?

I know this is old news, but is there a baseball reasong that Balet was traded? The Cheetahs got cash condsiderations? Was it financial? I'd hate to see them trade away such a good hitter. Losing him to an affiliated club would be too bad for the Cheetahs, but understandable. Losing him for cash seems like a real bummer. Is there someone on the horizon that they are looking at to take his place?

Danny Firlit, who was picked up by the Diamondbacks in early August, has earned a spot on the D-backs' AA El Paso roster for the 2003 season. He'll go to spring training as El Paso's starting shortstop.

I talked to the D-backs' Player Development Director yesterday, and he told me that Danny was far above what they expected. They were very impressed with his glove, his bat and his mental makeup, and I was told that Danny carried Lancaster to the playoffs with clutch hits and his defense.

Congratulations to Dan Firlit, hopefully the first of many Cheetahs to be on the way to the big leagues.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: November 6, 2002

Cheetahs trade Balet to Joliet

CRESTWOOD, IL The Cook County Cheetahs of the Frontier League today announced the trade of third baseman Pichi Balet to the Joliet Jackhammers of the Northern League.

Balet, 24, was a 2-time Frontier League All-Star and set the League single season batting average record in 2002, finishing the season at .405. He was second in the League in hits with 123 and led the Cheetahs in runs batted in with 64. Balet made the Frontier League All-Star team in 2001 with the Dubois County Dragons and repeated in 2002 with the Cheetahs.

This is a good move for Pichi, said Cheetahs General Manager Chuck Heeman. Hell get a taste of a slightly higher level of competition and be able to stay in the Chicago area. Pichi just moved here from Florida, and didnt want to go to another part of the country to play.

In return for Balets contract, the Cheetahs received cash considerations.

The Cook County Cheetahs open the 2003 season in late May, and tickets are on sale now by calling 708-489-2255.

Thought you'd all like to know!

Cheetahs name Moore 2003 Field Manager

CRESTWOOD, IL The Cook County Cheetahs of the independent Frontier League named the Leagues 2000 Manager of the Year, Mike Moore, as the teams Field Manager for the 2003 season.

Moore, 32, was drafted in 1991 by the Cleveland Indians after playing three years as a catcher at West Virginia University. Following his career with the Indians, Moore played catcher and outfield with the Frontier Leagues Johnstown Steal from 1995-97. He was selected to the 1995 FL All-Star team as the Steal won the 1995 League championship.

After retiring as a player, Moore served as a coach with West Virginia University and Oklahoma City University before becoming the Field Manager for the Johnstown Johnnies of the Frontier League for the 2000 and 2001 seasons.

Moore was named FL Manager of the Year in 2000, as Johnstown finished with the Leagues best record, 48-36, and won the Frontier League championship.

After serving as hitting coach for the Florida Marlins Class A Jupiter Hammerheads in 2002, Moore was let go as the Marlins released their entire minor league coaching staff.

We had been looking for a leader for a team we feel has a tremendous amount of returning talent, said Cheetahs General Manager Chuck Heeman. We started a real upswing last season, and we need to continue that in 2003. Were lucky to have found someone who not only knows the Frontier League but has had very recent success in the League. Its not often a championship manager comes along, and were glad Mike chose to come to the Cheetahs to continue his career.

Moore lives in Tequesta, Florida, and will relocate to the Chicagoland area in March to take command of the Cheetahs field operations. In the off-season, Moore will be responsible for scouting and signing players to the 2003 training camp roster.

The Cheetahs also announced that the contract of right-handed relief pitcher Chad Bircher was traded to the North Shore Spirit (Lynn, MA) of the Northern League.

The Cheetahs added to its office staff with the appointment of J. Willms to fill the position of Director of Ticket Operations. Willms, who served as an intern for the Cheetahs during the 2002 season, replaces Kelley Currier, who has accepted a sales position with the Peoria Chiefs of the Midwest League.

FIRST PITCH MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND

Greg and Lisa Wendt, principal co-owners of Columbia's new minor league baseball team, look over MU's Simmons Field, where the team will play next summer.

More than a year ago, St. Louis native Gary Wendt researched places across Missouri in search of the best home for minor league baseball.

"Hands down, it came up Columbia," said Wendt, president of Columbia Professional Baseball.

Standing with city officials on Monday, Wendt announced that a Frontier League franchise would play its first game in Columbia on Memorial Day weekend in 2003.

"We started this process about 16 months ago, and it's nice to see this finally come to fruition," Wendt said. "We look forward to working with the community and, at the same time, building a franchise we can all be proud of."

Mayor Darwin Hindman said he was excited about the future of baseball in Columbia.

"This is going to be a great thing about Columbia," Hindman said. "The community, the state, the county everybody is a winner."

Wendt said his company has four goals: to field a competitive team, provide family entertainment, give back to the community and profit from the investment.

A family of four should be able to buy tickets, hot dogs and beverages for less than $30, Wendt said.

In early October, the city, MU and Columbia Professional Baseball completed a five-year lease of Taylor Stadium and Simmons Field, ending nine months of negotiations.

Looking back at that journey, Wendt thanked many people on Monday, including Hindman, City Manager Ray Beck, MU Chancellor Richard Wallace and Director of Athletics Mike Alden.

"These people have shown some vision and cooperated fully through this ordeal," Wendt said. He also made special mention of Gene McArtor, senior assistant athletic director, who negotiated the lease on behalf of the university.

McArtor was "sometimes tough but always very fair in this negotiation," Wendt said.

After completing the lease, Columbia Professional Baseball sought a team for the field. On Oct. 22, league owners unanimously approved Columbia Professional Baseball's purchase of the Canton (Ohio) Coyotes franchise and its relocation to Columbia.

Greg Wendt, Gary Wendt's brother and a principal owner of Columbia Professional Baseball, declined to say how much the company paid for the franchise.

Greg Wendt's wife, Lisa Wendt, is the other principal owner.

The team is likely to drop the "Coyotes" nickname, Gary Wendt said. The general manager, whom Wendt plans to announce in the near future, will help pick a name.

I had heard through the grapevine that the Cheetahs might be moving to Columbia, Missouri, and that the official announcement would be made on October 28th. Then I saw the following article, and it made me more convinced it could be true.

http://digmo.com:8080/digmo.nsf/slugs/1018team
Annoucement Expected Later this Month
JEFF SONDERMAN, reporter@digmo.com
October 18, 2002

Frontier League Expanding Westward
The investors who leased Simmons Field earlier this month expect to make "a very exciting announcement" later this month that a Frontier League baseball team is coming to Columbia.

"We are feverishly trying to acquire a professional team from the Frontier League to begin play in 2003," said Gary Wendt, president of the leasing company, Columbia Professional Baseball.

Wendt said his group on Oct. 28 plans to announce the purchase of a Western Division Frontier League team, as well as league approval to relocate it to Columbia.

Wendt also said Frontier League Commissioner Bill Lee has told him that league approval, in this case, was "no more than a formality." Lee was not available for comment Thursday afternoon.

There are six teams in the league's Western Division: the Cook County Cheetahs, the Gateway Grizzlies of Sauget and the Rockford RiverHawks, all in Illinois; the Dubois County Dragons and Evansville Otters in Indiana; and the River City Rascals of O'Fallon in eastern Missouri.

Simmons Field Leased For Five Years

The city of Columbia , MU, and Columbia Professional Baseball signed the lease of Simmons Field earlier this month.

The contract runs five years -- from Jan. 1, 2003, through Dec. 31, 2007 -- but Columbia Professional Baseball may terminate the lease after two years if the operation is not "economically viable," the document says.

The agreement will also bring a guaranteed profit to the university.

Columbia Professional Baseball will pay MU between $32,800 and $72,800 for use of Simmons Field in 2003. The actual amount depends on attendance

Hello Fellow Cook County Cheetahs Fans!

I am a full time student at Illinois State University and feature cartoonist for their student newspaper. I am also a big Cheetahs fan and enjoy watching their games after I get off work in the summer.

Last summer I decided to draw a "furry" style cheetah cartoon character in a Cook County Cheetahs uniform. I sent it to the Cook County Cheetahs to see if they had any use for it. To my astonishment I was soon contacted by the Cheetah's webmaster who wanted to use my cartoon on their website. Unfortunately, I was later told by the General Manager of the team that they had decided against the use of my character.

Since you are all Cheetahs fans, I figured you might enjoy seeing my Cheetah baseball player cartoon character. If you are interested you can see it:

HERE!

I also made one for the Kane County Cougars which is on my website as well. MY website is www.hoagiebot.com. I hope you all like the drawing, and I can't wait until the next season of Cheetahs baseball starts!
