Subject: Worth noting: Only the best 18 scores count
In reply to: D9 's message, "Another example why Balance Rules are unrealistic" on 13/07/21 2:04pm

So, the 50pt penalty, which sits on the "out of position player" may not actually impact your SL score... all it does is reduce the chance of you producing a good score with the "out of position player" - something that is 'realistic'

If TEAM X is out of KPF players, they will name PLAYER Y in FF (assume Player Y is a small fwd). TEAM X may still win, because their tactics change slightly, but the reality is PLAYER Y now has to play 1:1 against Jake Lever... a very tall task for an undersized bloke to come out and kick 5 and score 100 points.... so this "penalty" is a way of making it realistic. TEAM X can still win with PLAYER Y (-50)... it's most likely PLAYER Y ends up 1 of the 4 non-scoring players.

A pretty simple approach for coaches who have no eligible players is to name the guy who avgs 40 as your KPF, not the guy avg 80, leave him at FP without the penalty. That guy who avgs 40 may come out and have the game of his life (scoring 100) but it's highly unlikely... so he'd probably end up in your bottom 4 scores even without the penalty, with the penalty applied it almost confirms the outcome... at least if you take that view, you know you won't actually be conceding much, if any, on your overall output.

Set your expectations, cop it on the chin when the time comes, it's fantasy football after all. You're in a keeper league with a certain set of rules and the goal is to build a squad of 50 players that can weave its way through the season against all challenges to win. Whether you cop a large list of injuries (reckon everyone has copped their fair share this year) or suspensions, depth gets tested - thats part of the fun. Similar to game day, your gun MID in greenwood goes down in opening minutes and scores 0... UNLUCKY! That's fantasy footy... the guy with the 50pt penalty (because all your other eligible players are injured/not getting selected) scores 70-50=20... you gained more than the coach with greenwood... yet both coaches actually just ended up with a player each in their bottom 4 not being scored... it aint the end of the world and it aint playing for sheep stations... but these rules have been defined and it helps to keep our game somewhat realistic (and avoids us having to 'ask another coach if its ok' during a finals series) - supercoach does it in their way, other keeper leagues (which a few of you guys are in) do it their own way... SL does it in a very flexible manner that has evolved over the years. Let it be, orr....
