Another year goes round, this one a little different for the Whippets without an early pick. Why? because we identified Hayden Young as gettable... With a year in the game and a few AFL starts which provided plenty of evidence that he'll be a player of the future, a great addition to the best 22 for next 10 years.

9 Trades... majority resulted in pick exchanges to move us up in the draft... this ultimately paid dividends in stealing Alex Davies at Pick 22.

Started with: 5+21+35+49+77 (traded our 5th round away in last years trade period)

Finished with:22+25+30+48+55+58+63

A loss of 544 draft points (equiv to Pick 34)... yet we cleared out list space and replaced it with a top 10 draftee with proven AFL ability + a developing KPP (Emerson Jeka). Overall a very successful trade period.

Now, to the draft.

Alex Davies - Pick 22
When he started sliding, we became very active in trying to move up the draft to snatch him. In the end it was only a jump of 3 picks... at a bit of a cost, but worth it as I doubt he would have been around at 25. Had always been up there in the talks of one of the best mids in this draft class. Bont-like attributes who we are hoping can slot into the whippets 22 in 2021.

Sam Berry - Pick 25
Went with the kid who had the numbers. It was a matter of best available. Toyed with going for needs but the quality that was left on the board with regards to potential output was too hard to give up and we felt a few of those "need" types would slide to my later picks. Berry could very well come straight into the midfield that has recently lost a couple best 22s & is carrying a few older blokes through the middle.

Errol Guldren - Pick 30
To have the two guys I wanted at this pick still available (Carroll) was a dream, but made it very hard. So much so, we toiled with a trade. May have been a better idea to trade, given some of those "need" players were gone come Pick 48. Having said that, we went Guldren given Whippets already had 5 Blues. Guldren is an almost like for like of Papley (another Whippet) but his younger years has been more of an Accumulator. We're hoping to station him on the FFlank as soon as next year. Swans don't bat very deep so there might well be a spot for the pocket rocket.

Henry Smith - Pick 48
With RO'B being the locked in Ruck for next 8 years, and Peter Wright finding a new home where he should get a regular run at it, we weren't desperate for a ruckman but it's always good to carry a couple developing rucks for a few years to see if they come good. Lions also an interesting position when it comes to rucks, no real #1, so you never know, could be in the mix in a few years. He will pair with Jameison as two very fresh KPF/Ruck kids for the Whippets future.

Jack Saunders & Corey Durdin - Pick 55 & 58
Here we went with some gap fills. Needed small fwds, there's generally not all that much potential scoring in these types but we needed to fill the balance needs and these kids are both very dedicated characters which could hold them in good stead for early appearances and rapid growth amongst some senior teammates.

Zach Sproule - Pick 63
Always had this guy pegged with my last pick and could have got him with Pick 89, so we attempted a few late draft swaps to try and move 55/58 up while moving 63 back... it didn't quite work, which wasn't an issue. Sproule has been developing for a few years now, thrown at both ends and in the ruck with the 2s. With Cameron and Corr moving on, it opens a couple roles, now we assume Preuss takes the fwd spot but we felt it might be worth a punt with an already developed Sproule. If he gets in, it could be a beauty. It also makes the Team Balance spread look really nice.

So, here's the summary:

INS:

Hayden Young - D2
Sam Berry - M
Alex Davies - MF
Errol Gulden - MF/F2
Jack Saunders - F2
Corey Durdin - F2
Henry Smith - KPF/Ruck
Zach Sproule - KPF/Ruck
Emerson Jeka - SWING

OUTS:

Allen Christianson - Retired - Really didn't get much value out of Allen unfortunately, he was a good scorer just could not make it into a Brissy team who fast tracked their improve.
Lachlan Hosie - AFL Delisted
Cameron McCarthy - AFL Delisted
Matthew Parker - AFL Delisted
Daniel Venables - Whippet Delisted - Initially delisted due to his concussion issues, good for him that WCE rookied him, hopefully he comes out the other end, might make for a decent MSD pick.
James Bell - Trade - Included in the Jeka/Young trade, was just coming into his own with a spot in the swans line-up. Might be interesting to see if he holds that spot with a few of the new kids recently drafted. Would have liked to keep Bell, but he was the deciding factor in getting Young on board so happy to conceed. Good luck Shy.
Aiden Bonar - Trade - Very similar to Bell, not as good a scorer but he is close to a best 22 spot and with Norths cull, that might be even more likely now. Would need to improve his scoring to be of any value in SL. Was a pretty cheap giveaway for an ex-first rounder, 14 pick upgrade across 2 picks.
Jake Kelly - Trade - Already a best 22 with crows, so would have kept for depth. 2020 was a step backwards for him but the previous year he was a 70+ avg player and in the mix for best 22 in the SL side... should he bounce back, I think he'll make a supeerleague coach very happy given he cost only a 5th round pick + 5th round upgrade (5picks)
Tyson Stengle - Trade - Had interest by 4 coaches for this one, probably because he was always going to go quite cheap. Trouble maker and out for the first few games of 2021, albeit embeded himself in the 22 in 2020, I saw a little risk in carrying him for not much upside. So we sought a pick upgrade and were able to net an 8 pick upgrade across 2 picks.

2021 best 22 breakdown...

DEF
Jayden Short - Liam Jones - Zac Williams
Jack Bowes - Thomas Jonas - Hayden Young

Emg: James Aish - Shaun Atley - Trent McKenzie - Others...
A very sound back 6 with, Jones nearing his way out, we have Battle/Cox in the waiting so there's no concern about future. Should Bowes improve again in 2021, this back 6 could be near the top 4 of SL. Depth a bit questionable as Aish and Atley are probably only 70-85 at best.

MID
James Worpel - Brad Crouch - Dom Sheed
Adam Treloar - Reilly O'Brien - Jacob Hopper

EMG: Sam Walsh - Sam Berry - Alex Davies - Jack Newnes - More...
The midfield is shaping up extremely well. Depth are kids, so we really need the top dogs to stay injury free, Crouch and Treloar have really battled of late and it has caused many missed opportunities. If these guys stay on the park, Whippets will win games and push for the top 4. SL teams need 2 or 3 guys who provide 13-150 games, RO'B / Treloar are these types so we need big years in 2020.

FWD
Tom Papley - Peter Wright - Angus Brayshaw
Ben Ainsworth - Jack Darling - Will Snelling

EMG: Josh Caddy - Brennan Cox - Mitchell Hannan - Others
This is where the WHippets start to fall in a heap, there are some solid contributors in there but some significant improvement is required before Whippets start seeing some climb up the ladder. Darling the absolute centre piece!

Some other talking points - many Whippets changed clubs in this trade period - all of which should see some improvement in their output.

Adam Treloar - To the dogs, makes that a very scary midfield, but AT will be the one in there getting the pill out to the runners (libba and AT to bully most midfields)

Brad Crouch - Goes to a relatively weak midfield in the saints. With their improvement, we'll see his scoring improve no doubt.

Zac Giles-Langdon - Moves across to WCE, they've lacked small fwds in the past and Langdon has some experience so hopefully finds a spot alongside Darling and JJk.

Peter Wright - Will get game time at dons when their rucks are useless and they don't have any genuine KPF. Dons will play him ahead of their kids who will need time.

Mitchell Hannan - Can score well when given opportunity. Not sure dogs will actually have a position for him. If so, it will be in the fwd pocket... at dees he had a little more up on the wing so it'll be interesting.

Lachie Young - This move is probably the best of the lot, for a kid who plays that intercept and bouncing role - he moves to a club in a complete rebuild, should see plenty of opportunity and hopefully gets the right role.

This year, Whippets start to see their senior players reaching that 27yo + bracket. With that number sitting at 10 now, 20% of the list being in the "old" bracket means we want a flag push for next 3 years. Having said that, our under 22 best 22 is still nice and maintains strong promise:

Bowes - Battle - Morrison
Young - Ruscoe - Perez
Worpel - Davies - West
Ham - Cox - Ainsworth
McHenry - Jeka - Hanrahan

Jameison - Walsh - Stephens

E: Guldren - Berry - Durdin - Saunders

Have a very merry christmas all!! Bring on the 2021 season, back to the full 20min qtrs!!
