Tim, that's a painful story. I've had two related experiences. One was in high school - after a cafeteria worker came down with hepatitis many kids, including me, had to get shots. In the crowded infirmary they called in three at a time, either all males or all females. There we learned that the shots would be given in the butt, and each of us had to drop our pants and bend over for what seemed like 10 minutes. Huge, painful shots, and I was embarrassed to be wiping away tears in front of the other two guys. But lots of other kids, even some of the older ones, reacted the same way.
Other experience was in the ER after a friend had an accident. There wasn't a lot of privacy, and while walking around I saw a guy, probably 19 or 20, get a shot in his ass. Another guy was in there with him and didn't know a passerby could see. He groaned loudly during the injection, and I know it was penicillin from the nurse's comment afterward that penicillin can really sting. Looked like it.
