The NHTSA report mentions "civilian CVs", which category taxi's would fit into. They are all the same fuel system platform (Panther). And all are susceptible to fuel tank failure during a severe rear-end collision. The NHTSA report, I believe, even lists a civilian vehicle as being fire involved with fatalities. It was something to do with stopping on a freeway for a traffic jamb and being struck at high speed. So, they are just as susceptible, it's just that they are not subjected to the potential of that type of collision on an everyday basis.

Look at it this way. 47 officers have died this year from hostile gunfire. How may CPAs have died from hostile gunfire? Probably few if any. But they don't work in the territory that an officer works in, i.e., a risky business.

In the past two months, I've worked three wrecks with a total of 4 deaths that involved a rear-end impact, post-collision fire. One was a Mustang, one was a Cadillac and one a Toyota. They are happening but they aren't making news.

Has anybody ever seen Fight Club? Remember the star, his job? He worked for a major auto manufacturer and his job was to go document the cause of collision/fire vehicles. He was in a "division" that did nothing but that. The manufacturers have such divisions because these things happen all the time.
