Very sadly Miss America is just another pageant now and the general population sees them as antiquated at best or stupid. The heyday of Miss America ended years ago and no one sees anything special outside of our community about Miss America. In fact when people think about pageants they think of four things: Miss Congeniality, that long piece by John Oliver after Miss America Aired, that poor “such as” SC USA teen and that USA/Universe is the only one anymore except rinky dink ones. Those people don’t even know that Volunteer exists. They think of USA or Toddlers and Tiaras. Feminists think pageants are degrading (not true) and although they are also not aware of all the ownership drama it makes it even worse. I don’t think America or Volunteer will last much longer and that’s really unfortunate. (NT) No name

The average American cannot even name their state senator and the demographic MAO and teen needs to reach could care less unless they know someone who is involved. it breaks my heart to sat this, but the people who might have been able to save the program were all pushed aside in favor of whoever Shantel thought she could get enough money from to pay the bills. She killed the MAOTeen program because she couldn't get her hands on their money and dreamed up some scheme to get the money but ended up killing it instead. She didn't like the people who could have saved the MAO tradition so she was left with Robin and some guy with a questionable past. She signed it all over and left town, happy to be out from under a dying program, one she helped to kill. I hate to say this but RIP MAO. (NT) No name

Is your claim then that Casey's talent was worse than Alabama and Illinois? It doesn't matter whether its to her own personal standard, it matters whether it is better than the other contestants, and there is no single solitary person on this planet Earth who would have placed Erika or Scarlotte above Casey in talent that night. Well you must have forgotten that Miss America never was and never will be strictly a talent competition. Truly. If judging had been fair, there is simply no way she should have received enough points for her Interview alone to have upset girls like OK, MD, and MA. Her domination of interview is not in question, but that should not be enough given she had issues in all other aspects of competition. I was actually a friend of a contestant that year. She told me that based on what they were looking for that year that it was a foregone conclusion amongst the other contestants that Harold was going to going to win that year. I personally have no opinion about Harold. All I remember is she was a Harvard Law student. That ain’t nothing. Oh, and then there’s the fact than Fran Skinner was the Illinois director who also prepped Marjorie Vincent and Kate Shindle. Fran was a force! When I got her autograph October 18, 2002, Phyllis George pointedly asked me my thoughts on this pageant. I said I liked Harold. In reality I've played Preslar's talent repeatedly plus watched her state pageant's talent & interview. Glad to see positive comments about Harold because folks - including me - often rail against her win because of what it said systemically about the pageant and how its judging system could be executed incorrectly (i.e. liking a girl in interview and subconsciously giving them extra points in other competitions, given overall issues with subjectivity in judging [no structure or rubrics for actually deciding on scores, etc] allowing them to come away with the crown) but by all accounts she is an intelligent, charming, accomplished and beautiful woman. But a girl like Preslar, who isn't quite as strong in interview (but still charming and smart!) should by all accounts have won, given strength across the on-stage competitions. The "Fabulous 100th" Shantel SOLD OUT Miss America and all the girls she promised and owed scholarships. Would still love to know how the sale went down with the BoD, considering how messy the ownership issue is. That's where the real shenanigans were played. Well, the pageant this year was held back in January....do you refer to the upcoming one held next year when Madison Marsh retires her title and crown to another unsuspecting winner who has no clue what the next year will be like with Robin and Glenn.
