The title is given to the most deserving and most accomplished of the applicants. Lydia is definitely very deserving and has done more to promote the Volunteer pageant than anyone I have seen over the past few years. Including raising money for St. Jude’s and doing community service work. She exemplifies what Volunteer stands for. Girls will not compete because they know that they will be black balled. In her quest for the MAO crown the first MI volunteer has said nothing positive about the experience . MI girls run from the thought of this system. Sponsors are also hard to come by because Paula has been known to ban vendors. People do not want to loose business. Subject: Watched the California pageant livestream, and I have to say, the way they handled the runner-up announcements was downright classless. No respect for the first runner-up, who was their current sweetheart. Making her crown the second runner-up as the new sweetheart instead? Talk about thoughtless and humiliating. They completely stole what should have been her moment to shine. That poor girl deserves better—wouldn’t blame her if she decided not to return.

Personally sad to see so many Sweethearts come back and not win. Most of them have given up on Volunteer when they try again and place worse than they did the year before. I also don't blame any of them for not returning if other states are going to do the same thing during crowning. I haven't seen any states crown their Sweetheart directly at the state pageant except Utah. The young woman carried herself with remarkable grace. The organization could have handled this much better, and I hope they extend an apology. According to her Facebook, she finished in the top 10 and received the Director’s Award at the National Sweetheart Pageant in Hoopeston, IL. Following the public speaking out of it came the replacement Oklahoma titleholder making top 10 at MVA and now said director is judging Sweetheart… My thoughts: why not just let him go and save the potential reputation damage of the org? He was released from his position shortly after MVA. Now as far as I know Oklahoma has 0 director. Which is a shame because the state has had pretty great finishes at both Teen and Miss. Two contestants in a row complaining about the exact same thing is BAD. And two Miss last year who reported sexual harassment from their directors. I’m proud of these girls for having the courage to speak out about it. This seems to be the only way to achieve change.
