[> Subject: Not sure why this question is even relevant. It’s an open title. Open, meaning anyone can apply. The title is given to the most deserving and most accomplished of the applicants. Lydia is definitely very deserving and has done more to promote the Volunteer pageant than anyone I have seen over the past few years. Including raising money for St. Jude’s and doing community service work. She exemplifies what Volunteer stands for. You sound like a bitter pageant mom whose daughter didn’t get selected.instead of attacking these women, why not try to support them instead?

[> [> Subject: I wasn't trying to attack anyone, I was genuinely curious. I'm pretty sure the last two miss Michigan volunteers have been from Michigan, so I was surprised to see a girl not from Michigan this year, especially this far away from the National Pageant. If they wanted to give her an open title, I figured it would be one that hasn't had a native contestant before.

[> Subject: I agree with you. It’s an open title, no requirements so they are not breaking any rules. This state has been without a director since before the national pageant. So they need a titleholder who is independent, resourceful, capable and self-sufficient. Let’s not forget the Volunteer pageant is only in its fifth year. It’s still growing so there’s always going to be potential for development and changes. But let’s try to be more supportive of the remarkable women who are taking on this challenge.

[> [> [> Subject: They do try. But if an instate gal doesn't take it, they offer it to contestants from other states -- typically who are aging out but would still like the national competition experience.

[> [> [> [> [> Subject: This was my thought! I didn't mean to sound like I was picking on her, but they've had native Miss Michigan Volunteers before, so why would they give Lydia the title? If they wanted to give her an opportunity at nationals, they could've given her a state like Maine or Nebraska that hasn't had consistent representation.

[> [> [> Subject: I’ve also wondered this about Haleigh Hurst. How did she win Virginia when she’s from Texas and goes to college in Oklahoma. I heard she got accepted to law school in VA next year, but that wouldn’t qualify her for this year. And don’t believe online classes count either. And they even held a pageant with quite a few girls in it. Seems like Volunteer bends the rules for those they like.

[> [> [> [> Subject: That's what I'm afraid of. I've been a volunteer girl through and through because of all the drama with MAO, but if they're gonna start blatantly picking and choosing girls for states instead of trying to grow a state Pageant, that's a huge bummer.

[> [> [> [> Subject: I’ve wondered this myself. Don’t get me wrong, I love Haleigh and think she will probably win the national title, but I feel bad for the other girls who competed in the VA pageant who did meet the qualifications. Because it’s clear that Haleigh didn’t. She’s a Texas girl through and through. Not sure why she didn’t just compete in that state.

[> Subject: Volunteer has struggled in MI and will continue to struggle in MI as long as everyone is afraid of the MAO state leadership. Girls will not compete because they know that they will be black balled. In her quest for the MAO crown the first MI volunteer has said nothing positive about the experience . MI girls run from the thought of this system. Sponsors are also hard to come by because Paula has been known to ban vendors. People do not want to loose business. Combine that with the high franchise fee and it is no wonder that MI struggles to keep leadership and can not get girls.
