Just personal belief.

Possibly others can relate the same. Tell of experiences of the enema during these years (50s and 60s).

Enemas given for fever reduction, constipated child, help speed recovery from illness. Such as colds and flu. Also for what is called “bad gut syndrome.” Where the child was acting up. Fussy, grouchy, fighting etc.

I remember moms would say an enema would help.

NEVER as a punishment.
Always was better to consult doctor or nurse beforehand.
And when the doctor or nurse in small towns was contacted seemed an enema was always suggested.

Bear in mind this was in the late 50s and into the 60s.

Not saying right or wrong. Only stating what it was like then.

At least in our home, and my friends homes, it seemed boys got an enema more often than girls.
