The 50's and 60's were often referred to as "The Golden Age" relative to enemas. Douching was probably quite significant in those days as well. As the only male child in the household, I probably got as many enemas as my 3 sisters combined. The girl's seemed to be more nurturing as I often believed mine were punishment for failing to have the daily BM or for being "grouchy" or out of control/uncooperative.

It took many years and reflection to come to the conclusion that mom and grandma, with the support and encouragement of our pediatrician, that an enema was a valid treatment to address a plethora of issues. Few things beat a coffee enema for revitalization when desired!
