Having fun is tiring!

Haha. I’ve just spent an entire day filled with nothing but fun in the company of 11 other girls in one of the best themes parks in Philippines - Enchanted Kingdom.

We were first part of the parade with our little charges. I was paired up with a 4 year old bundle of energy and we had an awesome time waving to the crowd, dancing, jumping over cracks and fake racing each other when there was space in front of us. It was hot out but we quickly returned to the performance tent for a story-telling session by Miss Karla, the reigning Miss Earth 2008. The Frog Prince was told alongside an entertaining drama performance on stage.

Then came the fun part!! After the story-telling, we girls got to roam the theme park and experience whatever ride we wanted! I paired up with Miss Hungary and we went on the most exciting rides like a roller coaster, the Viking boat and a mechanical hot air balloon that left me breathless from its powerful centrifugal force. Haha. Dont forget the thrilling water rides that got us ALL squealing as water splashed about and soaked us to the bone. Haha. My favourite ride had to be the Flying Fiesta though. You were strapped to a seat and lifted off the ground with absolutely nothing below your feet. Haha. It was such an exhilarating experience that one. With nothing below you, your feet dangling high above the ground and the wind running its warm gentle fingers through your hair, it’s a liberating yet adrenalin pumping experience.

I could surely ride the Flying Fiesta a million times over and not get sick of it. Theme parks always brings out the kid in me. And with the little angel with a sunshine smile by my side, I felt like I was 10 all over again.

As I write this on the bus ride home with lights dimmed to stimulate a conducive sleeping environment, the biggest testament to how much fun we had would be the sleeping 4 year old in my lap. :) My present to her before we left the theme park was a flashing light wand with a star tip because I want this experience to be that bright shiny star that makes her smile every time she thinks of the time she spent an entire day with Miss Earth 2009 delegates in Enchanted Kingdom. I know it’ll definitely feature prominently in my mind in time to come.

Enchanted Kingdom has definitely got me under its spell with its exciting rides, yummy food (we had fried chicken for dinner!) and of course the friendly people, all who came up and clamoured to take pictures with us girls because it’s a rare opportunity to have girls from all over the world together in your country for an international pageant.

Thank you all the staff at Enchanted Kingdom for having us. Thank you the security for taking care of us. Haha. I found it highly amusing that people had to be turned down as we were ushered away when people asked for photos. So this is what it’s like being a mini celebrity. Haha. Might take some time getting used to.

It’s not, however, all fun and games. The other girls went through their interviews as we spent our time in the sun. Also, the National Costume competition comes up in about 2 days time.

Time to rest up now.

Mabuhay from the Philippines!

I’m in the restaurant with Miss Mexico, Miss Nepal, Miss Honduras and Miss South Africa using the hotel’s free wifi. It is teh awesome! The other girls are all on their laptops while I’m on my Berry blogging this and tweeting from my iPod Touch. Haha ge3kness to the max!

I’m sorry I cant be posting pictures but here’s what has gone down so far.

Day 1 has been exciting. We’re all just settling in, getting to know one another and taking some time to chill and get used to the surroundings. Of course it’s an absolute pleasure to meet the different girls from exotic countries like Turks & Caicos, Spain, Brazil and the Dominican Republic just to name a few. Learning more about where they come from and where they’re at in terms of geographical location is fascinating. Some interesting nuggets about the girls include how Miss Turks & Caicos actually owns 3 boats (that’s the life you get when you live in the Carribeans!), Miss Switzerland has a Sri Lankan dad and a Swiss mum which explains her skin colour. I’ve met some really great girls in my group too. We’re in Group 3 - Miss Thailand, Miss Greece, Miss Honduras, Miss Guam, Miss Mexico just to name a few. There are supposed to be 28 girls in our group but I think only about 3/4 have arrived. Some girls only arrived during dinner time.

Upon my arrival in Philippines at almost 12.30am local time, I stayed at Carousel productions (the official organisers for the Miss Earth pageant) and bunked in a room with about 5 bunk beds. Haha. But we’ve now moved to our official residences Discovery Suites which is absolutely beautiful. My current “flatmate” is Miss Slovenia. She’s so pretty! Miss Latvia looks just like a Barbie doll. Did I also mention Miss Venezuela looks like Victoria Secret model Alessandra Ambrosio? How on earth do these people grow up to look so good?!!?? These gorgeous people actually exist! !

Anyway, one comment Miss USA and Miss Canada made as we were having lunch was that I speak really good English. In fact, they thought I was from North America or something. You’d be surprised at how people dont know Singaporeans speak mostly English. Even when I speak Mandarin the Miss China, Miss Hong Kong and Miss Macau, they’re so amazed and pleased that someone speaks their language. In fact, I’ve sort of become their unofficial translator. Not that my Mandarin is fantastic, but I get the point across.

It’s humbling yet eye-opening to be in one place where so many gorgeous beauties carry themselves well. But at the same time, you still eventually find out that each and everyone is still almost the same on the inside despite our languages, skin colour and cultures. It might be too early to say, but we’ll see in time to come.

Anyway, it’s off to bed for me now. I’m heading off to the Enchanted Kingdom with 11 other girls and I get to wear sneakers! Haha. Actually I was on heels the whole of today and you know what? I was actually one of the taller ones here alongside my Chinese counterparts Miss China, Miss Macau and Miss Hong Kong. How interesting.

On My Way There….

I’m half packed a couple of hours before I’m scheduled to leave. I suspect tomorrow morning, when I get up, I’ll have to unpack some stuff so others will be packed. Toiletries, for example, have to go into the check-in bag or they’ll get chucked out if they exceed 100ml. My luggage is so full of clothes I’m not sure if it’s even possible to put my bikinis in. Hurhur.

But I’m mad excited about going on board a plane alone to a foreign country to meet other Miss Earth delegates. I really wonder what some of these other girls will bring. It seems to me, as I’m packing, as though I’m packing almost my entire wardrobe and house into a mere 20kg. Of course, the task is monumentous. It IS a beauty pageant afterall and one must never forget her arsenal of beauty tools like moisturisers, scrubs, lotions, fragrances and what nots. The question is, where I put them?!?!?

Oh did I mention I have seven pairs of shoes? Haha!

Anyway, I’ll try my best to update when I’m in the Philippines. I heard they have wireless there but I dont know if I’ll have to pay. Wonder if we’ll have free time. If so, I’ll head off to the Nuffnang PH office and ask them to let me leech their wifi! At the very least, I’ll try to tweet at least once a day! So if you’re interested in what I’m doing, follow me!

Mirriam Quiambao opens up about verbal abuse during marriage

MANILA – Television host-actress Miriam Quiambao has finally broken her silence on her failed marriage to Italian Claudio Rondinelli.

Quiambao told “The Buzz” host Boy Abunda in an interview Sunday that her marriage had fallen apart because of her husband's affair with a younger woman.

The “Patient X” star confessed that her husband admitted about his infidelity over the phone. She was in the country then for a guesting in a reality-based television show here.

She recalled: “We were already having problems then. And I wanted to follow to Italy to spend Easter with him, but he wouldn’t let me. And I was wondering why. I came here and guested."

“I was here. He called me and he said he wanted a divorce. And I was wondering why. I said, ‘Is there a third party?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ Sabi ko, ‘Let’s talk when I get back in Hong Kong.’ And ‘yon na inamin na niya.”

In 2004, Rondinelli and Quiambao got married in Boracay before moving to Hong Kong. Quiambao had relocated at the height of her career in the local entertainment industry. They separated two years later.

Many people speculated that Rondinelli had physically abused her. On Sunday, Quiambao for the first time denied the speculation.

She, however, admitted that she had suffered emotional and verbal abuse during their two-year relationship.

“Hindi naman po ako binugbog pero I experienced verbal and emotional abuse… and then toward the last three months of our relationship, that’s when he also fell in love with a much younger girl, a different nationality. And that what caused our separation,” she said.

After their separation in 2006, she returned to the country and resumed her hosting and acting jobs here.

Divorce proceedings

It took her three years to publicly discuss her marriage because Quiambao was prohibited by law to talk about it while the divorce proceedings in Hong Kong were ongoing.

On Sunday, she revealed that the proceedings are now in the “last stages.” The result of the hearings might come out either this week or by the end of the month, she said.

The former beauty queen is set to seek an annulment in the Philippines once the Hong Kong case is over.

She broke down in tears as she admitted that it was liberating and a big relief for her to finally talk about it in public.

“Ayoko sanang umiyak pero siguro it’s such a freeing experience to finally talk about it,” she said.

Life after Rondinelli

If she stayed longer in the relationship, Quiambao knew that her “spirit was going to die.”

In spite of what happened, she still cares for him and wants him to be happy, she admitted. She also doesn’t harbor any ill feeling toward him.

After the divorce, she said it’s her goal to remain friends with the Italian businessman, who spent his birthday “soul searching” in Bali, Indonesia.

Likening her experience at the 1999 Miss Universe pageant where she slipped and fell on stage, she said she knows that she can rise again after the divorce has been finalized.

“I feel that what I need to do is to stand up and move forward and trust that God is there behind me. Mas marami pa akong magagawa ng malayo sa kanya,” she said.

She is also optimistic that true love will find her again. If that time comes, she vowed that she will be more careful.

“And if ever that happens again, sana naman po siya na ang tipong binigay sa akin ni Lord para hindi ko na siya pagsisihan in the end. I have to trust Him,” she added.

One of the co-valedictorians of JCHS Class of 2009 was a beautiful Pinay named Victoria Hope Jose. Her graduating class of almost 600 seniors made history as the biggest in size among all public high schools in Hawaii. What are Bianca Manalo’s chances in Miss Universe? Will she be our third Miss Universe after Margie Moran-Florendo and Gloria Diaz? If you ask me, it would take a miracle and lots of prayers for that to happen. Given her assets, though, she has great chances to make it as a finalist. Still, anything can happen. Winning in Miss Universe can be a case of being in the right time at the right place—and before a right set of judges.

Why am I seeing Miriam Quiambao in Pamela Bianca Manalo? Will history finally repeat itself for the Philippines on Monday in the Bahamas as 84 beautiful women from around the globe compete for the honor to be crowned Miss Universe 2009?

The intensity, stride, smile, stage presence, charm, confidence, and look of determination on Bianca’s face, she is like Miriam in many ways during the latter’s Miss Universe stint a decade ago, wherein the dusky beauty nearly got away with the crown by being declared first runner-up.

Therefore, I am really crossing my fingers that Bianca’s name will be among those semifinalists who will be called to take center stage come big night in the Bahamas. Hopefully, the 10-year drought in our Miss Universe campaign will come to an end. By drought, I mean our failure to make it to the circle of semifinalists since Miriam’s time. That is all I’m praying that Bianca will make it to the top 15, and fight anew from there.

Anyway, I have to give credit to the Bb. Pilipinas Charities Inc. for sending Bianca to Colombia before she headed to the Bahamas. In our last column, I expressed doubts over why she had to be sent to that Latin country for polishing when lately our bets who made a detour to that side of the planet hardly improved.

In Bianca’s case, it was different. If the circulated YouTube video that shows her undergoing a medical procedure to firm up her abs is to be believed, then this only shows that we now mean business. After all, Latin countries particularly Venezuela and Colombia have long been doing that. Also in Bb. Pilipinas, there had been lot of candidates, who before joining the country’s most prestigious beauty pageant underwent surgery. It’s just that I think as a predominantly Catholic nation, we still have conservative beliefs towards self-enhancement through cosmetic surgery that we don’t quickly admit having gone under the knife.

But Bianca, based on the video, did it and that’s very interesting. And unlike the previous self-improvement sessions in Colombia wherein our candidates were forced to get a tan to make them more Asian-looking, Bianca’s natural color—smooth white skin—remains.

So what are her chances come Monday? Will she be our third Miss Universe after Margie Moran-Florendo and Gloria Diaz? It would take a miracle and lots of prayers for that to happen, if you ask me.

To say that Bianca will make it as far as top 3 is very ambitious already especially with the very strong presence of the beauties from Venezuela, Mexico and Dominican Republic. Gosh, these girls are goddesses! Nevertheless, given Bianca’s assets, I say that she has great chances to make it as a finalist. But anything is possible. Winning can be a case of being in the right time at the right place—and before a right set of judges.

If I were to enumerate her plus points, her being a flight attendant for Philippine Airlines would definitely work in her favor as she is used to working with grace under pressure. So I’m expecting that she will survive the backbreaking rehearsals and other pageant-related activities. In fact, she really did great during the preliminaries. She nailed the swimsuit competition that beauty experts from around the globe are now keeping an eye on her and declaring her as the best Asian candidate in this year’s batch of candidates.

Another advantage of Bianca is her height. Standing tall at 5’10, she will never be dwarfed by the Latinas and other giants in the pageant. And as a model for fashion czar Pitoy Moreno, it’s safe to say that she may not be the best on the ramp but you can still trust her to sizzle on the catwalk.

The third advantage is that Bianca comes from a family of beauty queens; her elder sister Kate Manalo-Hernandez was Miss World 2002 finalist, while her aunt Nini Ramos Licaros was Miss International 1968 finalist. Having such kind of family has surely helped in developing that determination and ability to shine even amidst many beautiful girls. Used to the company of beautiful and competitive women growing up, why should she feel left out in the Bahamas?

By the way, unlike our previous Miss U representatives, I never heard Bianca deliver such overconfident statements as “I’ll bring home the crown” or “I’ll be the next Miss Universe.” All I heard from Bianca was that she will do her best. She also appealed for prayers that she will do well. For that, Bianca is already a winner in my heart.

Lastly and for me the most important asset of Bianca is her strong faith in God. I once read in Ricky Lo’s column in The Philippine Star that Bianca’s a devout Catholic. She and her pilot boyfriend would hear mass every morning before going to work and would visit the adoration chapel after work. Thus, I am sure Bianca will really have a great time at Miss Universe because aside from doing her best for her family, friends, and country, she is first and foremost doing it for God’s glory. By the way, that’s another thing she has in common with Miriam—being religious. Let God’s will be done then on Monday!

Antes quiero darles a todos ustedes moderadores las gracias por esforzarse al prestar de su tiempo para mantener una tradición que une pueblos. Lamentablemente, fuimos testigos todos de una burla que paso de ser en algo constructivamente entretenedor a un burdo espectáculo de quinta, jugando así con el sacrificio y esmero de muchas jóvenes y familias, que sacrifican todo para cumplir un sueño.

El domingo 23 de agosto, fue una noche que marco la historia de los certámenes de belleza en el mundo, no era para menos pues el descontento de la elección de Stefania Fernández, de Venezuela, ha conmocionado a los fanáticos que a través de los años siguen fielmente el certamen de Miss Universo. No vengo a pedir insultos y mucho menos deseo la extinción del certamen, pues ya hay chicas que se están preparando desde hace mucho. Hay algo que le dolería mas a la Organización Miss Universo que el no enviar candidatas y es que su elegida no sea aceptada como tal, por eso es una idea que propongo para dar a respetar los sacrificios que hacen nuestras hijas, hermanas, primas, sobrinas, ahijadas, amigas.

Escriban a sus Directores Nacionales, y déjenle saber su sentir y descontento, además de que no inviten a la “Miss Universo 2009” a sus respectivos certámenes. Esto dejaría saber a la Organización que sus decisiones no son agradables y que se debería de hacer un proceso mas limpio, democrático y justo al elegir la nueva soberana. Fue una verdadera falta de respeto, lo que han hecho. Y nosotros los seguidores del concurso somos los que le damos vida todas las ediciones a este certamen, somos los que apoyamos a sus auspiciadores, los que compramos sus fotos y memorabilias, los que le dedicamos horas de trabajo arduo a nuestras representantes para que puedan lucir bellas y puedan darles un poquito de alegría a nuestros pueblos.

Nuevamente, escribamos a nuestros organizadores nacionales para no invitar a la “Miss Universo 2009” a sus países, y si ya lo hicieron que cancelen la invitación. Démonos a respetar, demos a respetar a nuestras representantes, nuestros y sus sacrificios.
