As her sobs wracked her body more and more, M�att pulled Synthis close, gently stroking her hair in an effort to try and calm her down. He couldn�t do anything right! All he wanted to do was make Synthis happy, and now she was crying into his shoulder � and it seemed like it was all his fault. He had asked her what was wrong in the first place, hadn�t he?

M�att, here� Ashertith gave his rider the images that Xiualith had given him, and the young man frowned. A man�her father? Her father with a belt? And a boy�a boy who was worried? What did that all mean? Was the man trying to hurt her? Why would her father try and hurt her? Stupid question really, he considered when he thought about it. Lots of men did that, especially to their daughters.

�So many tears��

He murmured into Synthis�s ear, his voice gentle. It was a phrase from his childhood � one his father had said to his mother when she cried. And she had cried a lot. So M�att was hardly unused to woman crying, but�what was she crying about?

�Synthis, please stop crying! I�ll do anything�just be happy again��
