Martan couldn’t help but smile at the expressions of surprise on both faces. To someone who assumes they have been shipwrecked on a deserted island, it must be a stunning relief to discover that not only is there a community on it, but a Weyr! To Martan, a weyr would always be the best place to live. But then, he was biased, wasn’t he?

The man nodded in response to Liandro’s greeting, waving away the youth’s concern. “Don’t worry about it. You’ve been through quite an ordeal, I expect – and nobody can predict what someone will be like if they appear to be holdless.” This last referred to himself, naturally. The holdless people were rarely kind and welcoming, and it was easy to mistake Martan for one when he went on his sorties alone.

Half-turning, he set off down the path, motioning them to follow. It wasn’t much of a path, really – more a place in the undergrowth that had been a little more worn down by feet than the other parts. Pausing for a moment when they reached a bend, the man gestured through a gap in the trees. “There. See it?” He asked, his own gaze following his hand to see New Isle Weyr, tall and impressive when seen from this distance. Carved into the mountain and bathed in the evening light it looked friendly, however. It looked like home to him, and a place where the people accompanying him would be able to stay as long as they wanted.

The ex-rider allowed them a few moments of looking before he set off again, leading them out of the woods and into the more open space outside the Weyr, divided into allotments. Sarri poked him yet again – telling him to make conversation. Conversation? Maybe he should tell them a bit about the Weyr. “The Weyrwoman is Wessae, of gold Shrineth, and the Weyrleader will be announced tomorrow, after the flight. If you – either of you – would like to stand at her clutch, I’m sure you’ll be able to. We always welcome new people – since we’re quite a new Weyr, we aren’t as full as we’d like to be.”
