Subject: But planning can backfire.

Riddan had been steadily working his way up, still climbing the vine as though it were a rope. He was nearly finished, but his hands were sweaty and he was starting to slip a little, so he wrapped his legs around the vine as well, hoping it would not break from him putting more weight on it. When it still seemed sturdy, he reached up once more - and feels his hand touch something in the air.

He pulled his hand back immediately, his green eyes darting towards whatever the thing was. The boy had never seen a fire-lizard before. It was brown and lizard-like, and soon three more came into view, a bronze, a blue, and a green. They were all fluttering around Riddan's head, and before he knew it he was swatting at them with one hand and holding on tight with the other, nearly forgetting his place until he felt himself slide down a little. "Oh, scorch it..." He said, biting his lip and taking another swipe at the chirping firelizards, "Get away from me, you!"

As if on cue, they darted off. Riddan, breathing a sigh of relief, spotted a young man on a nearby tree branch. At first, the fourteen-year-old was startled, and he tightened his grip on the thick green vine, which then made a ripping noise near the top, like the thread in a piece of cloth unravelling, only much more alarming. It won't break. It hasn't yet, so it won't, and I'll get up there easily - His train of thought was interrupted by K'vren's voice, and he focused on what K'vren said. It was much better than focusing on the fact that the vine could snap any second and send him plummeting down to the forest floor. Much better indeed.

Upon hearing that K'vren was from the Weyr, Riddan mentally congratulated himself for making it as far as he did. It was the next bit he wasn't particularily happy to hear. "I don't need any help getting there!" He half-shouted, "I'll be fine, I just need to get over this thing..." Riddan gestured with his head at the massive fallen tree. He was stubborn and wouldn't accept K'vren's help, at least not so soon - he was determined to prove he could do things himself.
