It's not, by itself, going to cure you of the desire to smoke.

But it might be an effective way to get you over the worst cravings the first day or two after you smoke, and to remind you to stay on the straight and narrow if you succeed in quitting but are tempted to relapse.

A long time ago, I had a friend who asked me to help her quit, and the deal was, she could smoke as much as she liked, but each evening, I'd count her cigarettes, and give her one solid whack with a small wooden paddle - it was actually a cribbage board. The first day she smoked her half a pack, took her spanking, figured it didn't hurt much, did the same the next day. When she felt the paddle land on day-old bruises the 2nd evening she just about jumped out of her skin and went cold turkey, and made it the rest of the week without another.

But after we parted ways, I suspect she relapsed, when there was no cost to doing so.
