I think that they do deter. Spankings really hurt, even our beltline runs in scouts left your bottom sore. But, as for really teaching WHY right actions are right, I don't think they went very far. They did deter wrong actions and that is not to be scoffed at.

Same here, JenniAnn. The few spankings I got as a teen made me feel very shamed and humiliated, and that was mom's and dad's intention. The idea was that if we had done something bad, then we were supposed to be ashamed and feel very bad about it. My parents did not get super weird, but they also did not do much to spare us our dignity.

I hated those experiences, but they made me the spanko I am today.
