I would like the discussion to focus on true accounts. Included in the discussions can also be any discipline received at home as a result of the school paddling. The first time I was paddled was in the 3rd grade. It was afternoon recess and 2 boys went to the back of the playground to fight. I think 4 more of us went to watch. This was a long time ago and the details are foggy. The 2 boys were fist fighting and one of us noticed the school Principal walking our way with paddle in hand. One of the boys who was fighting took notice and managed to slip under the cylcone fence. He lived close and I guess he went home. The rest of us just waited until Mr. H____ got to where we were. He asked who was fighting but no one said anything. He told us to line up. One by one, he had us bend over, with hands on our knees, and gave all of 3 licks. I remember being scared because I had never been in trouble at school, but the licks did not hurt that much. The bell sounding the end of recess rang by the time he was through paddling all of us. When he finished, he told us to go back to class and we wasted no time leaving. To the best of my knowledge, the boy who slipped under the fence was not noticed absent from class and did not get in any trouble. [ Post a Reply to This Message ]

The first I remember was in first grade. Me and two other boys in front of the class facing the chalk board with hands on the board. Our teacher Mrs. Austin had a small paddle. I can't remember how many licks we each got or what we did to earn it. 1961 was a little bit ago. I also remember being scared but when it happened it didn't really hurt at all. I know for me the possibility of receiving an old fashion spanking was a deterrent preventing me from doing certain actions. For example, at a young age, I knew what happened if I shoplifted. But as a parent, I would prefer to be notified of behavior problems and left to take care of them myself, than allow someone else whack my child with a 2 foot long hunk of lumber. I was in public schools from roughly 1961-1973 in San Jose. I know they were not given in the schools I attended there during that time. My 6th grade teacher was the school's disciplinarian more or less. He'd make kids hold dictionaries out with their arms extended and I have even seen him smack a kid over the head with his plastic covered notebook. Maybe CP was being done but nobody knew about it.
