Good point about hairbrush spankings being no secret. I do think that their effect and potency for behavior modification are rather underrated. Due to her weak back muscles my mother would never have abandoned her yardstick for an implement so closely linked to otk and other close range positions.

Reflecting on this, I doubt that I was ever in any danger of praise for the influence of some spanking mom's hairbrush causing her to retire her yardstick.

What she might well have done is change to a switch. She cut one once when we were working together on the shrubs. I inquired as to whether I was in trouble. She said no, I want it "just in case." I wondered but did not ask "in case of what?"

I did immediately toss the unpeeled switch which had been stored on top of the ice box. I was so nervous doing this that it landed in plain view but was left to turn brown for weeks!

Clearly Ivy's mother represents the Jewish mainstream view on spanking: reluctantly useful as a last resort only. Her aunt seems a bit too eager and willing to spank. Perhaps she has mellowed.
