When I was five, I stole a Baby Ruth candy bar from our local Kroger store. I knew better. I had been misbehaving and mom told me no candy. So I decided I would take it instead. I knew it was stealing, but didn't care. I got caught at home eating it and mom made my grandmother take us back to Kroger. On the way, she quietly told me I would be going back into the store, showing the wrapper, admitting I stole it and apologize, promising I would never steal anything again. Then mom also let me know in no uncertain terms I was getting my bare bottom spanked when we got back to the car. I did as mom said, showed the wrapper, admitted to stealing and promised I wouldn't do it again. Then I was marched back to the car, where true to her word, mom pulled my pants down to my ankles, bent me over her knee and blistered my bare little butt hard and fast by hand. It was one of the longest spankings she had ever given me. I kicked and cried at the top of my lungs and I have no idea how many people walked by witnessing me getting spanked like that. At one point my grandmother pulled her hairbrush out of her purse and suggested she use it. At this point, I'm not really sure if mom actually used it or not because all I knew is how much the spanking was hurting. I don't know how long she spanked me or how many swats. But as I was climbing into the backseat and trying to pull my pants back up at the same time, mom told me if I ever did it again, she would bust my bare butt in the store, "In front of God and Everybody".
