I love that cartoon. I am a 70 year old grandmother. When being raised in the fifties and early sixties the Sunday "Funnies" were a big thing. Comic strip kids like Little Iodine, Dennis the Menace, Nancy, Dot, the Wyatt kids and the Smith kids were (like most of us) spanked a lot.

What is unique here is the scholar is getting reinforced on her bare rear, as I almost always was. And this appears to be authentic and not photo shopped.

I once asked why the Sunday comic strip kids were not spanked on their bare butts. Mom said they were but they could not show it in the newspaper. I accepted this explanation and even recently used it to explain to one of my grandkids, when, watching a vintage Western together, why a teenage girl was spanked on her bloomers

I was a weird kid and fascinated by spankings. Though they were not uncommon, it was rare that I actually saw one happening. Comics were the most abundant and compelling depictions available. Spanking was a subject to amuse an audience but I, for one, was not smiling unless maybe it was an adult being spanked, which was also an entertaining idea for people at the time.

Staying on topic, even spankings in the comics were on the buttocks not the thighs. It was referred to by some as seat-pants discipline. As anyone familiar with the comics knows, the comic artist typically drew stars or heat waves emanating from where the lesson was being applied. To me it represented punishment given with thoughtful care, when the parent is fully in control of their emotions and being as careful and deliberate as possible to administer a safe but effective punishment.
