Though they were not uncommon, it was rare that I actually saw one happening. Comics were the most abundant and compelling depictions available. Spanking was a subject to amuse an audience but I, for one, was not smiling unless maybe it was an adult being spanked, which was also an entertaining idea for people at the time. Staying on topic, even spankings in the comics were on the buttocks not the thighs. It was referred to by some as seat-pants discipline. As anyone familiar with the comics knows, the comic artist typically drew stars or heat waves emanating from where the lesson was being applied. To me it represented punishment given with thoughtful care, when the parent is fully in control of their emotions and being as careful and deliberate as possible to administer a safe but effective punishment. One showed two kids talking. Kid #1 A great artist can change a smiling face to an unhappy one with a single brush stroke. Kid #2 That's nothing. So can my mom! The cartoon strip NANCY! For some reason Aunt Fritzi was always threatening to spank Nancy with her rather bathbrush-like round brush. Were women's hairbrushes ever equipped with a round-shaped bristle head?
