Curfew violation the night before. I was a few swats into the paddling when our doorbell rang. Our school was having a food drive at the time. It was right around Christmas time. Mom answered the door. I was already bawling heavily as dad stopped the paddling. It was a boy from my class collecting canned goods. Fortunately he could not see into the area where the paddling was being given but I was bawling pretty hard. Mom went into the kitchen and came back to the door with several cans. Once the door closed the paddling commenced again. My bare bottom was a mess when dad finished. I was so embarrassed and afraid that he heard me bawling but nothing was ever said. Even though I was an excellent student, and much better behaved than most kids my age, I was not meeting the standards of my family. Mom was particularly concerned about what she perceived as my lackadaisical attitude over bat mitzvah studies and my "disrespect" and sass. During this time my Bubbe (my mom's mother) was staying with us for a few days. I knew she was horrified I was being spanked. I thought this an opportunity where I could push the envelope a bit, without fear of getting it. But I miscalculated and found myself over mom's lap . My tush was already on fire when there was a knock on the door, and Bubbe popped her head in, and motioned mom with her finger.Mom told me to get up and sit on the bed. Hairbrush in hand she went out, and I had hope that Bubbe's pleas of mercy would hit home with her obedient daughter. Not this time.
