When we got to a certain age, around the beginning of middle school, a very hard little paddle was introduced at home, and spankings became a genuinely feared punishment. There was real fear when I got in trouble. We were naked for our lickings, but that was not the fear. Once the spanking started, you could hear the shrieks and crying all throughout the house as a bottom was being set on fire. The licks were to the same spots again and again with no break between them. The punishment seemed to last forever but was probably only a minute or even less. My behind would burn for awhile afterwards, and all the rubbing in the world did not help. The paddle would leave bullseye bruises on the two spank spots that went from a deep cherry red around bedtime to a purple the next day that did not fade away for several days to over a week.

No matter how old we were, or how tough we wanted to be, the difference in our family is that the spankings were very effective. I don't remember ever getting more than one spanking in a whole year. It was also extremely embarrassing when it happened, so that was a strong part of the discipline that added to the deterrent effect.
