 I've never spanked my two. OK they've had the swat but never a real spanking.
I think some people feel uncomfortable if it moves from a spanking to a beating. Sure, you can hurt anyone with a belt or a stick but it feels worse.
My boy cousins were smacked a lot when they were small but my uncle more or less stopped doing it when it took more than his hand to get their attention.
Speaking from experience, dad's hand was plenty to get my attention even in my late teens.
