I had no idea of the complexities of arranging for the skin on a bottom to be rubbed like the skin on a foot in an ill-footing boot. I did know that what was intended was, at the least, a very intense spanking. So any talk of having my naughty bottom "blistered" was very influential. I am convinced that few moms really did achieve blisters like footwear could after just a mile or two. What metaphors were most prompting of better behavior for your children and if you can recall, for you? Once store clerks teased us after we were detained for attempting to steal packs of small bb ammunition for our air rifles by warning us that our daddies were going "to wear a hole in the seat of our britches!" It was and is the awareness that there were/are appropriate correction instruments in the house and the certain knowledge that they would be used on the bottom of a naughty child or rebellious teenager if the occasion arose. And there has never been the slightest doubt about this in our family, even today. When the barrel starts to overflow, typical phrases are: "Your skin/fur seems to be itching" (Dich juckt wohl das Fell) or "You must be tickled by the oat" (Dich sticht wohl der Hafer). Then the child is well advised to be very careful for the time being, but like all kids usually without success in the long term. And of course there are always occasions when prior warnings are no longer appropriate, but the corresponding punishment is due immediately for a sufficiently serious offense. A good friend told me that he found that the "certain" component was the most important and that he never spanked all that harshly. The spanking moms that I grew up with spanked when earned, always. In their house rule breaking guaranteed a spanking. For me the "awareness that there are appropriate correction instruments IN THE HOUSE and the certain knowledge they would be used on the bottom of a naughty child or REBELLIOUS TEENAGER if the occasion arose" would prompt extremely careful and conscientious behavior. It is ironic that I seem too polite to you. On my too brief visit to your beautiful mountainous country, I felt that many persons I encountered were very patient and that because I was dressed so casually they were more courteous than I merited. I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to return and perhaps to have a conversation with you over tea. I do believe that the very physical presence of implements whose only reason for being is to spank naughty bottoms firmly makes a highly influential statement silently and a much louder statement when employed. We have a version of the oat statement. We say that a person acting out is "feeling his oats." This is more a causal assertion rather than a warning to calm down and it refers generally to the youthfulness of the actor.
