I don't remember anyone in my family getting spanked for too much defiance. Like you, there was a line we could approach, but it wasn't difficult to stay on the safe side of that line. Why be defiant if a parent can end the discussion with a spanking?

Spankings were the result of very bad behavior, but not because we wanted to get caught. In life, sometimes we act impulsively when away from home, or make the mistake of thinking we will get away with something, or believe we are "too old" for a spanking. I became rebellious as I got older, but not too openly.
