Spanking is not just about the ride but the destination as well. The child's journey should take him or her through an emotional cycle -- shock, indignance, fear, embarrassment, powerlessness, shame, acquiescence, release, acceptance, resentment, reflection, and then... BOOM... the light bulb goes on. At that point the youngster understands the error of the misdeed, has taken ownership of it, realizes the punishment was justified and feels atoned for. The technical aspects of spanking are merely the tools one uses to guide the child through the roller-coaster. It could be a dozen brisk hand spanks over jammies or a lengthy bare bottom whipping with a leather strap. Whatever works with your child.
