It was very rare that I gave warning swats to our girls, though it did happen. Usually it was one or two on the seat of the pants or over a skirt, sharp enough to convey a clear message that a real spanking could be the next progressive step.

To this day, I also remember an event in my life that may have helped solidify my belief in real/good old fashioned spanking. One day when I was in college, around 1998 or 1999, I was in my apartment and a daytime talkshow who's host I don't recall (Sally Jessy Raphael?) had an episode discussing spanking. Naturally there were two 'expert' guests who advocated for no spanking. By the late 90s that wasn't surprising. But the one guest expert who wasn't opposed to spanking recommended that "A spanking shouldn't really cause pain, but should just get a child's attention...two or three light slaps with the hand on the seat of the pants is plenty."

When I heard that I couldn't help but think about it. I was raised by parents who used spankings. While I never once felt they didn't love me, nor was I abused, every so often I earned a much needed spanking. And when those occasions came, my mom and dad never gave two or three light slaps. Instead I was given traditional, old-fashioned spankings. They were always over the knees, and with my bottom bare I was rapidly spanked or (when I was older) paddled. Instead of "two or three swats," it was was probably more like 15-20 spanks. While it still seemed to be over fairly rapidly, the sting was always unbearable, and (most importantly) memorable.

Seeing that talk show at age 21 or 22, maybe just nine or ten years after my own childhood spankings ended just sat wrong with me. That probably helped firm up my own belief in spanking. At some point not too long after, my future husband and I were seriously discussing beliefs in parenting. When we learned that we both believed in spanking, let's just say neither of us planned on giving severe spankings, but neither did we plan on the "two or three swats" approach.
