I can't vouch for others, but spanking isn't all that common these days, even in homes and schools where it's still practiced.

When I was going to School, spanking was very common. In fact I got spanked or paddled at School at least once a year and sometimes more from First Grade through Seventh. I got paddled five times in Seventh Grade. Twice in Gym, Once by my American History Teacher, Once by my English Teacher and once by the Assistant Principal. The one from the Assistant Principal was the last time I was paddled in School because my Parents withdrew permission to use Corporal Punishment on me and my Brother and Sister. Because of how bad I was beaten that day. I live about a block or two from where I grew up and my kids attend the same schools I went to. But they stopped using Corporal Punishment before my oldest started school.

At home, spankings were the go to punishment. Momma did most of the spanking and always on the bare bottom. Usually by hand or sometimes by hairbrush. Daddy spanked sometimes bare by hand as well. I also got spankings from my Granny, my Aunt Connie and Uncle Roy and a few of my friend's parents. My husband and I do spank our kids at home usually bare just like we got it it. I usually use my hand but each of my kids have gotten the hair brush once or twice. I don't spank as often as Momma did me.

Spankings were pretty common in public when I was growing up, sometimes even bare bottom. I got a few in restrooms or out in the car. Or other times I would get a quick slap on the butt as an "attention getter". Now its very rare even in this part of the South to see a child get spanked in public and a public bare butt spanking is pretty much unheard of in this day and age.
