Hello again, Millie and all!
I remember when my children started walking on their own instead of sitting in the buggy, coming along to neighbourhood walks and shopping in the city. They had quite a lot of energy and endurance. I had bought them sandals that I thought they would put on outside the house and garden where they have always been barefoot, but none of them wanted to put them on.
I always wanted them to decide on their own and only advised them to watch where they step. So I was soon around with three pre/primary school age children going barefoot in places where I would never have considered doing so myself. In parks, supermarkets, along the city streets, all around the pedestrian zone, parking garages, public transport, you can imagine that their young little soles soon turned deep black all over, or later as their arches developed, black pads and heels standing out against pale arches. A funny feeling at first for me as the mother responsible for them (and wearing my shoes), but soon it just made me happy, after all it's a sign of the enjoyment of childhood like a child's laugh and fuzzled hair.
There's also the effect of siblings encouraging each other. They fortunately get along great with each other. Comparing who runs and skips fastest, who can climb on trees and also who gets the blackest feet (they were never afraid of that).
So now they are coming into their teen years and my daughter has attended teenie parties where she took care to have the appropriate "city soles" to go with her style.
As their mother I'm just amused. They can be scrubbed clean before they go to bed and it's just a side effect, I just love their enthusiasm in everything they do.
All the best from Anita and family.
